Casual autumn trousers

TheCalmHiker · Today 20:15

As of last year, I started working almost entirely from home, so I no longer need to dress smartly for the office. My casual trousers currently consist of jeans and… more jeans (both slim and baggy!). My old work trousers feel far too smart for the school run, a coffee or a day working from home.

I’m a pear shape, size 8–10 on top and 10–12 on the bottom, with chunkier thighs. I tend to wear slouchy, wide-knit jumpers (think Joseph/Jigsaw/COS/Émile Sézane style) in cream, oatmeal, pink, grey and green.
I’d love some suggestions for casual, comfy trousers that still look and feel lovely with this sort of knitwear. I worked in an office until last year and I think I’m struggling a bit to find my feet style-wise now I’m not dressing for work every day. Jeans have always been my default, but they used to be easier to rotate with office clothes!

I caught myself enviously eyeing up two mums at school pickup recently who’d clearly been in work and both looked lovely and perfectly autumnal. Nothing particularly dressy, just really nice outfits that looked effortless. It made me realise I’ve lost my way a little bit and would love to feel a bit more me again.

My actual life is very much school runs, dog walks, the odd coffee, working in my home office and occasional trips to the gym. I live rurally, so a swishy city look wouldn’t really work, and I don’t want to feel overdressed for my day-to-day life.

What trousers are you wearing that strike that happy medium between comfy and casual but still feeling a bit pulled together? Particularly interested in styles that work with chunky knitwear and a pear-shaped figure. Would love any brand or outfit suggestions! 😊 budget flexible (I rarely buy anything unless a moth eats it so happy to invest a bit)

this was the pic I meant to post - sounds very much like the outfits you are describing. I’ve got a pair of these and they are very comfy but also smart looking

I've got the brushed jersey version of the Uniqlo trousers OvergrownIvy linked and I love them

I have these Hush ones, very soft and comfortable with elasticated waist, can be dressed up or down, and quite generous in the hip and thigh

Zara have loads of lovely barrel leg smartish trousers that I like wearing with a tee or jumper and docs if that sounds like a vibe?

Was just about to post the Uniqlo trousers but I see a PP has beaten me to it. In milder weather great with a fitted t-shirt or top, great with a chunky jumper too.

If you fancy trying skirts, I also like a long satin skirt with a chunky jumper and boots - I have these ones https://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-purcie-leather-chelsea-boots/brown/p114009316

A wool a-line mini with opaques, boots and a slouchy jumper is another go to outfit.

edited to add - the Uniqlo trousers look much better on than they look on the website. And very comfortable.

I have three pairs of those uniqlo ones and am going to get the brushed ones next. I was also going to suggest some wide-ish straight legged cords but see these have also been suggested.

I am also trying to find the right skirts yo wear with jumpers and ankle boots - I'm thinking Frends Phoebe circa 1995. I think this would be a great autumn look.

Really struggling with footwear at the moment though, find I am just wearing high tops constantly as they go well with the barrel legs.

I can't believe I'm posting on S&B, but hey.

I bought these two weeks ago and they are lovely. Warm, comfortable, great quality corduroy in this fantastic subtle dark beige with a green undertone. IMO they look best with a close fitting top (I tried a cream ruched gym top over a grey vest which worked well. But you're slimmer than me so a slouchy jumper would look cosy.)
