Work from home and meeting colleagues in the flesh for first time at big Xmas party at NEC Birmingham. Very few photos of the venue in party mode so not sure what to wear. Any tips for oldest woman in the company by a long way! Petite size 12 basically straight up and down. Prefer 3/4 or longer sleeves and midi length. I'm thinking black with some glam/glitz but out of my comfort zone so struggling with shopping. Will only wear it once!

Ha! I’m the oldest woman in our company. I will be wearing a full length OTT gown and I’m similar size to you. If you are conscious of your waist, then look for something with a definite waist line or demarcation.

My local charity shop has a bridal/ evening wear department. Could you find something similar locally if it’s a one time only purchase?

Surely there’s a dress code?

Is it black tie, or smart casual, or … ?

Boden have just launched their 26 partywear. M&S have some party outfits with velvet trousers or organza fabrics. Separates work well for mix and match at future events too.

I’ve been to the NEC Christmas party thing a few times for our work do. For starters, there are a huge range of ages. All the women wear some sort of glam (ish) party wear - ranging from full on ball gowns to black trousers and a nice top. I’ve worn a velvet/velour jumpsuit, a LBD, a sparkly number and colleagues have worn similar.
It’s not a jeans and a t-shirt night but anything you feel good in for a night out will look great. Have fun!
