comfy but stylish warm trousers for mother (80), not wide leg

Hi I am looking for some trousers for my mother that are not wide-legged and are soft, comfortable material, but that also look relatively stylish.
I am finding it very difficult, as she is petite and can't wear wide-leg trousers (tripping hazard)
I would usually go to Uniqlo or M&S but can't find anything with a straight or tapered leg.
Do you think I could get some wide-leg ones tapered in at the tailor?

Have you looked at the Damart catalogue?

Or Lands End as they do different leg lengths ?
Cotton Traders are also good for basics

Damart not very stylish but I certainly have seen straight leg and tapered in M and S. Like these. There's a whole section.
I would also try Next and John Lewis.

Damart and Cotton traders were my first thought.

If your mother wants really warm trousers, mine likes Robell. They are a German brand and they do petite fleece lined ones in lots of colours. The Marie style is more classic but the Efi is slightly wider. The official UK stockist is So Simply. They have a huge showroom in Dorset near Blandford Forum.
My mother won't wear Damart, other than their thermal base layers!

Robell Marie Petite Fleece Lined Trousers | So Simply

With a shorter leg length, the Robell Marie Petite trousers sit perfectly. Stay warm and cosy this winter with super-soft fleece lining. Free UK Delivery.

Would she wear cords?

Keroppi · 12/10/2026 17:46

I've seen lots of older ladies in Cherry Berry trousers. They're stretchy, comfy and straight leg/tighter fitting on the leg. Long and Capri size

OsfameronTanamoril · 12/10/2026 17:50

Lands end starfish trousers or cords?

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 12/10/2026 17:51

This may be completely irrelevant, but myy MIL (with dementia) was tiny, but absolutely insistent she was a size 12. She wasn’t. She was a size 6 (she was under 5 stone by this point). We really struggled to find trousers that would fit her, and ended up with stretchy school trousers from Next which looked nice whilst being comfy. Bonus was that when she noticed the 10 in the label we just said, “oh, they come up large, just try them.”

Used to get my mum soft trousers from M&Co not sure if they would be smart enough but a good selection of petite leg lengths.

I’ve just bought these and they’re really comfy. They’re straight legged too. Cotton with a bit of elastane and only £16 so even better!https://www.marksandspencer.com/cotton-rich-straight-leg-joggers/p/clp22511885?intid=mobile_app_pdp_share&color=Navy

Bon marche do short legs. Shortest is 25 inches.

@PinkOrangeRed do you have any recommendations from their sale (or non-sale) for lighter-weight trousers too?

She also has some of the needlecord ones that @OffTheMap recommended. The fleece-lined ones are super-warm for when it's really cold. My mother really likes the fit of Robell, but she is 5'7" so not petite!
