I’m looking for a navy outfit for my dd’s wedding. I tried on this dress (along with a lot of others) today and liked it. i’ve been told it looks frumpy and awful on me. Can anyone recommend any dresses for me? I’m 5’6, size 14 with a stomach so can’t do fitted round the stomach? Or do i just say stuff it i like this one who cares what others say? https://www.phase-eight.com/product/yasmine-textured-midi-dress-10025950351.html

I think that’s a fabulous and cool dress, the texture is unusual. It won’t look frumpy with the right accessories - maybe silver bag and shoes.

@MOBdresshunt are you wearing a coat over it? It does look particularly warm for winter wedding; is it mainly indoors?

MsMacheath · 11/10/2026 23:02

That's a scam drop shipping site. Also available, cheaper, on Amazon and several other dodgy sites. Returns are to China.

I like the OP's choice- just don't style it the way it's styled on the website

@MsMacheathtips for styling would be very welcomed - i was thinking irovy or nude bolero, jewllery such has brooch and shoes navy or ?

I have the same issue - I’m booked in at a massive John Lewis with a stylist. It’s a right challenge for me because I don’t wear dresses 🤦‍♀️

I don’t think you can just buy stuff online, it’s much better to go into shops and feel the fabrics/try on.

Some retailers you could look at that seem to do “wedding” type of outfits - Karen Millen, Reiss, Boden, Monsoon. Be careful when googling mother of the bride outfits, as PP said there are lots of scammy Chinese websites with English sounding names claiming to be based in London.

I would wear a large, dramatic brooch. I have 2 Lea Stein cat brooches (bought from the seller linked) 1 in ivory and 1 in red so would wear one of them. Failing that every charity shop and vintage shop has over sized costume jewellery. Other jewellery - small earrings, any colour or material. Bracelet in silver or gold or jade if that's something you already own.

To get to and from the venue or venues and to wear in church if needed if cold I'd wear my smartest coat. For that dress I have a vintage Acquascutum, just below knee length cotton coat in navy with a dramatic red swirly pattern which would go well.

Shoes, pointy ballet flat, or kitten heel in patent or velvet in any of red, green, fuschia or multi depending on the colour of the brooch. Pretty Ballerina has loads and if they're over budget supermarkets tend to have interesting flats. Definitely not nude and definitely not a bolero.

Honestly OP the dress you picked is much nicer than any of the suggested alternatives. I'd wear it. I wouldn't wear any of the others. The one on the scam site would be a possibility if it weren't a scam site. In reality it will look nothing like it does on the website.

Who said your dress was "frumpy" - such a stupid word. I don't think the opinion of anyone using it is worth much.

ArtforEveryone · 12/10/2026 12:27

Definitely no bolero, and particularly not in ivory or cream which will be far too much of a contrast. The dress doesn’t need it and it will detract from the overall look. Maybe a belt in red or silver.

No belt. MN is obsessed with sticking belts on.

Yes, agreed - belt not an absolute recommendation. Only if it works.

Are you looking for some other navy recommendations? What’s your budget?

OneNewEagle · 12/10/2026 16:35

And do you want sleeves? I would want sleeves ar a winter do. It just depends if it’s all at one venue or travelling between.

MOBdresshunt · 12/10/2026 18:51

Thank you all for the pointers that’s really helpful. What i liked about this dress in particular was it was heavy/thick much more than it looks so was very warm. It’s 2 different venues and the ceremony has no heating.
I welcome other navy suggestions from non-scam websites would prefer to go try on in person.
I spent the weekend dress hunting and am now a little dressed fatigue.

But i liked how the dress felt and looked on me, but do realise it needs accessories.

Edited to add ideally £300 or under for whole outfit inc shoes.

It's far nicer than the other suggestions. It looks more expensive than them, most of which are fussy and cheap looking.

I don't get the "you'll need sleeves" bit. Formal evening dresses often don't have sleeves. As for moving between the venues, that's what coats are for.

For the ceremony just wear a smart coat over it. I assume the reception will be in a heated venue?

OneNewEagle · 12/10/2026 19:13

If you really like it OP and feel happy in it then stick to that dress.
