Hi, has anyone been to Reykjavík in mid November and if yes please advise on the type of outfits. Mainly staying in the centre but will do the golden circle 1 day.
We are only there for the weekend so I dont want to take full hiking stuff if its not really needed.
Thanks

Waterproof boots and thermal socks. Lots of layers including a thermal base layer and a waterproof outer layer, top and bottom half. Hat, gloves etc and those electronic hand warmers are good for in your pockets.

We went in November, it was lovely. I had special walking boots but didn't need them just had normal boots and that was fine. It did snow on the last day but wasn't as cold as I expected.

We went the 1st week in Dec a few years ago. There was snow everywhere, but I think they'd had heavier snow falls than normal. The footpaths were cleared though. DH and I ski, so wore salopettes, waterproof jacket, gloves, ear muffs, gloves and walking boots. To see the northern lights tour at night, I also wore leggings under my salopettes. The first night it snowed heavily and I recall seeing a man walking down the road in just jeans and a knitted jumper. 🥶

In the day for the tours, you might be ok with layers and warm trousers, jacket, boots etc.

We went the first week of Nov 3 years ago.

For trips out of the city I wore a thick down jacket (mountain equipment Lightline, merino base layer (Isobaa) and thermal waking trousers (Acai),along with wool rich walking socks and walking shoes. Plus a good wool beanie and 2 part skiing mitts (the insides come out to dry). We all wire similar, kids with stuff mostly from H&M and Mountain Warehouse. We’re outdoorsy anyway, so had a lot of stuff already. Wool is much warmer than polyester, acrylic or fleece for hats, socks and gloves.

It was about 0 degrees during the day in Reykavik the whole time we were there. Not drastically cold! Inside was roasting everywhere we went, with all the geothermal heating (including under some roads).

On city days I just wore long johns under jeans.

Layers. Good hats. Be prepared for intense wind. Gave a great time!

Also note that daylight will be approx 10:30am till 3pm, so part of your normal 'day' will actually be in the dark. Shops etc are all still open, the streets are busy, but street lights are on and its as cold as the night.
