Holy grail of comfortable but stylish walking shoes for hot country

Missohnoyoubetterdont · 08/10/2026 09:04

Hello! Need help have been searching for ages. Going to very hot country, need a comfortable closed-toe shoe ( it’s very dirty and dusty) that I can walk in for long periods ( probably not trekking but round cities etc) but that will support my feet which tend to swell a bit in very hot weather. BUT want them to look nice, is this even possible? Maybe plain black something might work, white or cream etc a no go! Any help would be so appreciated! 🙏

Birkenstock London fits the bill.

These are unbelievably comfortable, though not particularly elegant.

I have a pair similar to these, can't say whether this leather's instantly soft (they usually specify 'soft leather') but the cushioning's superb.

'Soft leather'

Depends whether you can walk in low-cut flats (I can't; they fall off)

@GarlicEverything thank you but none of those look suitable for travelling in sadly, maybe the Mary Jane’s…

What about a hill walking trainer? Lots of different brands around so finding something you like shouldn’t be too hard. Some of them will be pretty light too. Lots made with breathable fabric these days or mesh instead of fabric. Off the top of my head brands like scarpa, hoka or Merrell should have something. If not there are loads of brands along the same vein you could try.

There are hundreds of plimsoll/trainer options lately. It all depends what sort of clothes you'll wear.

I looked at these but was worried about the bottoms melting! 😂 Are they comfy?

Yes, I was just looking for recommendations or suggestions. I have looked at a lot but thought someone might be more knowledgeable than me.

Skechers go walk/slip ins, no socks. Like walking on clouds. Buy a size bigger than normal to allow for foot swelling. They are not the prettiest, but they are comfortable. I always have a pair of cushioned insoles and heel grips for the sized up version for days when my feet are normal size ! 😊

Have a look at their Mary Janes and Microburst also, a little more stylish, well kind of! I'm not bothered by that aspect as long as my feet don't sweat and the footwear is comfortable underfoot.

Am trying to avoid sketchers just because they are so ugly! But everyone keeps suggesting them! 😩

Fit flop do an excellent range, have a look. They are all comfortable.

My Birkenstocks are perfectly fine in the Gulf, height of summer.

Im watching responses as I have the same search.
Im not fond of skechers but had to make an emergency purchase a few years ago when travelling and had plantar fasciitis. I bought this pair which were so good I have a second pair.
Key features I still look for. Proper lace ups. Arch support. Mesh allows for some ventilation. These are washable which is a bonus.

These could also be interesting. Same range less clumpy.

I can’t wear Clarks (even the so-called wide fit are too narrow), but unless they’ve changed in the last few years they’re not good for hot weather as they always seem to have plastic lining.

I have worn Birks for years, but the quality seems lower today. But I’ve never noticed them being a problem in hot weather.

I like Fit-flops, and they fitted my very wide feet well.

I suspect if your feet are narrow you should avoid Birks and Fit-flops.

Birks have a narrow fitting.

There is Tokio if you think the London is too enclosed. I have the London Shearling as slippers.

Closed toe walking sandal?

Not sure about those, they look a bit plasticky.
