Foundation for the over 50s are the colour matchers any good

There are appears to be nowhere you can go to get good independent advice about make up in particular choosing a foundation.
I currently wear No7 foundation calico ( not quite the fairest). I have vitiligo which I hate and want to cover. I use spf all the time, but still have small freckles/sun spots.
my current foundation I don’t feel is quite right cakes a bit, maybe looks a bit made up for me. For contact I add some concealer under my eyes, a little blush and mascara as some of my lashes are now white.
I work in a public facing leadership role so feel I do need a bit of a mask fr the day.
I see all the ads for the colour change formula, then there is Laura Geller. Please tell me over 5O ladies of pale combination skin who are often tired what works for you?

Laura Geller looks orange on me. It’s also very metallic looking

I was in the same boat @Needanadultgapyear, and still am really! I went to Harvey Nichols and had three foundation try outs, came away with samples. None of the formulas are right though so have gone back to my trusty L’Oréal that has been discontinued and only available on Amazon. Don’t know what I’m going to do when their supply runs out!

Of the three I tried the MAC one is the best but I find it doesn’t wear very well even with a fixing spray.

edited to add, I’m pale and the nars second from palest shade was a perfect match.

I wear calico too! But I mix it with trinny bff as otherwise it's a bit heavy. Laura gelled was awful on me, orange and blotchy. I think trinny has a new product which I might try, some sort of drops.

I like the Meroda colour changingg foundation. And in fact I have just started using more of their products and find them very good
i am quite fair complexion and don’t like heavy makeup.

That's strange, I have Laura Geller and it's my skin tone and a matt finish.

I have 55 year old skin and I use bare minerals and have for years. I have an expensive YSL cream foundation but always feel it’s a bit “much” so only use it on nights out. The bare minerals I wear all year round 😊

SmotherhoodandApplePie · 08/10/2026 07:56

I use Jones Road WTF although I know it's a bit marmite on MN.
If you send them a photo of your face in daylight they will colour match you .

It depends on budget and if it’s n7, then this maybe a stupid suggestion, but I swear my Victoria Beckham the drops, good coverage, makes my skin look healthy and glowy, but v expensive,

if a lower budget, but still costly is Charlotte tilbury flawless finish, much stronger coverage

Savvysix1984 · 08/10/2026 08:00

I’ve tried so many and have finally fell on B perfect Chroma. Reasonable price and build able cover.

I wear No 7, the hydraluminous stuff. I'm pale, think I wear cool ivory or something. no caking and medium coverage with a slight glow.

I tried Haus labs foundation the other week and it looked fine but no better than the cheaper No 7 stuff.

If your foundation cakes do you wear primer underneath? Are you hydrating your skin before make up with a good serum and moisturiser?

So I do serum, moisturiser and then primer before my foundation. I have day and night moisturiser and serum so lots of hydration.
But I work in a leadership in a busy environment think squat down, up down wrestle with a grumpy dog, spicy cat, blood, wee etc. I want to look put together to help with that old imposter syndrome.

Are you mixing oil based make up and water based?

Hydration sounds at a good level. Do you exfoliate? Chemical exfoliation?

Bringemout · 08/10/2026 12:10

I like dior face and body, it’s thin but highly pigmented so it doesn’t look cakey. I always found blotting with a tissue after foundation has dried down helpful.

averythinline · 08/10/2026 15:53

I use the in transit camera close up primer.. and the n7 foundation stay perfect...which input on with a brush... 2light coats... Its staying power is amazing!
I went in and was recommended colour cool vanilla ( was Clinique fair before) may review in winter as that was with my summer tan ! V dark hair v pale skin

Find the primer really good as well even with other foundation helped stuff stay and lie better

doveinitial · 08/10/2026 17:59

At 55, foundation no longer works on my skin. I use a tinted moisturiser by B Perfect now or a tinted sunscreen. Much better finish.

Needanadultgapyear · 09/10/2026 23:09

Apologies busy at work. I have no idea if I mix oil and water bases. I do exfoliate, but not as often as I should probably.
