Thoughts on John Galliano for Zara?

Am I being daft, or do I just not get all the hype about this and wonder how much is going to sell?

For instance, these are lovely dresses: Here and Here

But they are £700,mostly made of polyamide, and for that money you could get a decent, better made dress from a mid-level designer. What does anyone else think? Maybe I'm spectacularly missing the point :)

I won't be wearing either of those for sure. Unless you're going to Whitby gothic.

Prices are outrageous, was excited to see what was on offer

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 01/10/2026 13:19

This Galliano?
British fashion designer John Galliano was fired and convicted of hate speech in 2011 after making antisemitic and racist remarks in Paris, and he recently cancelled a major 2027 retrospective exhibition at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art following renewed public backlash.

Crazy prices for the high street and mostly looks like kids playing with net curtains and the fabric bin off cuts

DoubleShotEspresso · 01/10/2026 13:25

Goodness that price point is 😳

Henowner · 01/10/2026 13:27

I don't think I'll be buying any of it...

Picoloangel · 01/10/2026 13:30

It’s a no from me.

TheLarch · 01/10/2026 18:02

Phew - not just me, then. Reading the fashion press, you'd think it was the Second Coming (and not something from a rehabilitated racist).

£700 for a Zara dress, though 😂

Out of stock already, soon to be seen on Vinted at 4x the price no doubt

JaneJeffer · 01/10/2026 20:56

I wouldn’t buy anything from them

Or starring in a 1970s Hammer Horror vampire film ...! Both of which I would love to have done in my teenage Goth years!!

I think they're rather lovely &, though the tulle & lace elements are nylon, that's the norm for those fabrics - & much of the collection is pure silk. Still doesn't quite justify the prices, but I love the styling!!!

Pollyanna87 · 02/10/2026 07:25

I wonder if Galliano actually had anything to do with the design process, or if he just slapped his name on it.

HatStickBoots · 02/10/2026 08:01

Teenage me would have loved that first design! It looks like something which could be created (copied) by finding something like a vintage night dress to make the base layer and then re-purposing some other lace, tulle, voile, black net fabrics from secondhand black dresses, stitched and gathered and so on. The charity shops near me have a wealth of black dresses in them at the moment so a whole bunch of them could be bought and taken apart for something like this.
I would not buy the Zara one at that price because it looks like the sort of dress that you shouldn’t be too “precious” about, wearing it lots and not worrying if it gets ripped or torn whilst out but at that price I’d be terrified to wear it.

They both look suitable only for cosplaying Bellatrix Lestrange at a Halloween party.
