Should I change the buttons on this dress? Poll included 💜

I bought a dress from Hobbs last year which is perfect for my new modest dress code job. I love the colour, but was not sure about the gold buttons from the start. I mostly wear it with a textured Reiss black blazer (aircon) as this is the only blazer I have that works, others are navy. Next summer I am going to get the light colour blazer which will be an alternative. The black blazer also has gold buttons on cuffs and a single on the front, they look great. But overall too many gold buttons. I have asked ChatGPT to change the buttons to purple and I think they look better, though I would look for perfect match or darker. What do others think? I have added a poll just because I saw that it’s possible and never tried it before.

The dress looks cheaper with the purple buttons.

I'm not keen on the gold but I generally don't do gold. I'd probably put black buttons on it.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/09/2026 17:28

The problem with purple buttons potentially is that it might be difficult to find any that don’t look a bit shiny and plastic, in which case, yes, they might cheapen the dress. Generally though I agree with PP that gold buttons often look quite cheap. I still think wood might be worth a shot.

Firstly, I thought purple. But then no. Keep the gold. Purple is too ordinary. The gold is a bit of something different.

I would be tempted to do something fancy instead, flower buttons or different colours, lots of lovely buttons around but i get thats just me.

While geekishly scrutinising this autumn's collections, the most charming detail I've noticed from several designers is interesting buttons! Most are mixing them up, too - generally on a theme, but definitely mixed.

This pleases me no end. My grandmother used to make me clothes with variegated, fun buttons and, like most dressmakers (active or not) I have a button jar that is continuously fed.

So, @Flomasterina, while I'm voting for interesting buttons, the 'chic' solution would likely be covered purple buttons. Kits to make your own are fairly cheap and easy. You just need a bit of same-colour fabric.

So many threads are so very snippy right now! Surely we can all agree that a different aesthetic viewpoint to our own (on leopard print, buttons, or Carvela trainers - whatever seems to be setting so many off!!) is also valid? Even if we don't like it personally??!!!!

There are many people, whose style I admire, that wear clothes that I would not (& sometimes might even dislike). But it's the sheer élan with which they dress that draws me in. And often causes me to look at a label, a shape, a colour combination differently.

Is there a full moon right now or something ...?!!!

@EleanorMc67 Yes, it is full moon, and it seems that for some it’s in Uranus 😂
I am derailing my own thread but I’ve been howling at it for the last three nights.

I'm happy for anybody to wear what the heck they want. Just absolutely sick of all the ageism on here, so if calling it out is being snippy, then I'll carry on being snippy

Flomasterina · 29/09/2026 17:57

Thank you all for your opinions. The poll is 55% in favour of purple buttons.
I am not wooden button person, but the conversation opened me to consider other options, so will take it to our local haberdashers to see what the have.

Ref. modest dress code - indeed, it’s a small Christian company, no skirts above knee or anything too revealing. Makes a nice change as nobody looks scruffy unlike in my previous posh corporate office. Still plenty of scope to dress up.

I voted purple but I would use silver.

No, my point was more about all the arguing on various threads right now about what's tasteful/stylish versus "tacky", dated, etc etc. Some people just will not accept a different point of view!

I prefer the gold buttons, but I agree, with a jacket that also has gold buttons it would be too much.
If you go with the purple buttons, you could lift the dress with some gold jewelry.
