Industrial strength handcream for sore cracked fingertips

Can anyone please help? Every year, I get sore cracked fingertips as soon as we move into autumn/winter - sometimes it gets so bad they actually split at the edges. It’s really painful and also ugly! I’m in Scotland and it’s already quite cold, particularly in the mornings, but not cold enough for gloves yet, so it’s begun.

I’m religious about hand cream, currently Body Shop hemp, but I don’t think the cheap nasty soap in my work loos will help any. Last year the pharmacist gave me Epimax cream which I’ve started again this weekend but it’s a huge bottle (like mayo!) so no use for keeping in my bag.

Which handcream helps your sore hands? Happy to throw money at the problem but also instinctively think I need more “medical” and less “luxe” brands!

O’Keefs Working Hands hand cream is really good. We live on a farm in Scotland and that’s what we use.

AliMonkey · 27/09/2026 23:37

Aveeno is the only one that works consistently for me.

Freya1542 · 27/09/2026 23:40

second @BiscottiBandit's suggestion of O'keeffe's

SirChenjins · 27/09/2026 23:45

I third O'Keefs (however you spell it!) - amazing stuff.

Mmhmmn · 27/09/2026 23:46

Aveeno is good and doesn’t sting like Norwegian does

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 27/09/2026 23:50

Thank you so much for quick responses! I remember I had a little pot of O’Keefe’s last year which I think was an intense repair balm or something, and perfect handbag size so I’ll see if I can pick that up tomorrow again, then an Aveeno for at home. I can probably layer over the Epimax at bedtime actually.

La Roche-Posay Cicaplast handcream is really good

ErrolTheDragon · 28/09/2026 00:07

I don’t like hand cream in the day - my hands get Flexitol or similar (for cracked heels) when I do my feet at bedtime.

IsItTimeForGinYet · 28/09/2026 00:11

If you get sore cracks get some Snowfire. Amazing stuff.

millerpie · 28/09/2026 00:12

Nursem. My dh swears by it.

theblame · 28/09/2026 00:12

Gloves in a bottle cream during the day and neutrogena Norwegian at night

Negroany · 28/09/2026 00:18

Decant some soap-free hand wash into a small container to use at work. I get a specific type of eczema on my hands which gets worse if I use soap, so I've got a few different non soap washes now, if I had a workplace I'd take a bottle in with me!
The doctor recommended I use O'Keefes, and it does seem good (only steroids help the actual condition though).

Foolish1984 · 28/09/2026 02:15

Re: O’Keefe’s, do NOT get the pump! Even though it’s called Working Hands and looks the same, It is NOT anywhere near as good nor as thick, as the one in the tubs. I was so disappointed, it’s more like a body lotion, whereas the stuff in the tubs is nice and thick

minnowonthesay · 28/09/2026 06:33

I find my cuticles really split and get sore if I use Flash products, even a quick spray then wipe with a minky cloth can start them off. The L’Occitane Shea hand cream soothes mine.

daisychain233 · 28/09/2026 06:43

I like Kiehls’ Ultimate Strength Hand Salve - not too greasy and I’ve found it works well for ultra dry hands.

AmIReallyTheGrownup · 28/09/2026 06:46

Aveeno hand cream with the blue ribbon in the day, but overnight, this stuff is amazing.

I’d suggest a balm rather than cream.
inside this on my hands and feet.

Vaseline!!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 28/09/2026 08:19

I used to get cracked fingertips when I was milking during the winter (cows, in case anyone panics). I used a cream but it made things worse and I was told that I was likely allergic to the lanolin in it - lanolin is used in lots of hand creams. So if you suffer and it doesn't seem to improve whatever you put on, it might be worth checking the ingredients and looking for an alternative.

The soap is bound to be causing it / making it worse, I get the same, only in winter but it’s always the soap. If I use cheap bar soap instead of anything liquid it dramatically improves or goes away.

RosesAndHellebores · 28/09/2026 08:24

Agree re the soap.
Agree re the lanolin
If the best stuff comes in a huge size, decant some into a smaller container for handbag.
I have reynauds and find keeping that in check works wonders for my cracked eczema finger patches - a heated steering wheel has made a huge difference.

Executrixnotextraordinaire · 28/09/2026 08:28

Cracked heel cream at night but its too thick and sits on the surface for too long during the day so whatever works for you then, decant into one of the small travel pots for carrying about.

My husband would say I buy too much there, but it all works and lasts ages so I don’t find it expensive.

Lomonald · 28/09/2026 08:47

I would go to eithsr primark or somewhere and buy an empty pot and decant from the bigger bottle the chemist gave you, i do love okeefes though,
