Help me style these jeans and trousers

Help me style these trousers. I’ve bought two pairs of wide and barrel trousers that I hope to wear to work and more generally this autumn winter. Please help me find tops and shoes to go with them. I think both need tops that will tuck in - but I am very slow with new trends so need all the assurance I can get!

I’m 5’ 8” and wear flat shoes, trainers ideally. It’s quite an adjustment to get used to a lot more fabric and a different silhouette, and I’m relatively tall.

the barrel I have in long - they don’t look as ‘barrel’ as the image online

Why do you think they have to have tops that tuck in?

I'm a similar height to you, & think that the cropped just-below-the-waistband length of both the grey cardigan & the denim jacket that each is worn with is spot on. (I actually quite like both of them in their own right, in fact - though I don't know what they're like in actuality.) Though tucked-in would be good too with certain tops - I just mean I don't think they all have to be?

If you're at work, will you need lighter, even short-sleeved things? I overheat easily, so like to have layers I can remove. Outside work, is your lifestyle pretty casual if trainers are your preferred footwear? What do you want to wear with them - jumpers? Do you like the sleeveless-jumper-over-shirt look (think Toast).

What's your colouring & what sort of colours do you like/suit? What's your budget - M&S level?

FallenFigs · 24/09/2026 20:46

Good point. Maybe there is a security in having things tucked in?! Also I think my waist is a strength shape-wise (zero boobs).

yes, can defo overheat (I’m late 40s) and quite causal in general. Can also be casual for work - trainers ok as long as in good condition etc.

Like that sleeveless jumper look although have yet to actually try it.

Dark hair, brown eyes, freckled. Wear gold jewellery, like strong colours (raspberry, cobalt blue, strong green, plum). Not great at pattern. Budget is definitely M&S level. Love Whistles, Hush, Bellarose etc but via Vinted!

Ah - I've got big boobs & no waist, so maybe I'm a bit biased against the tucked-in look!

(I am wearing head-to-toe Vinted as I type - Whistles chunky flatform sandals that I bought earlier in the summer, navy twill Toast dress & camel mohair-blend Autograph jumper (as there's a nip in the air here in Edinburgh tonight!). The dress & jumper arrived today & I really love them! Sorry - completely irrelevant to your trousers dilemma, I'm just rather chuffed with my bargains ... 😁!!)

These merino tanks are great. I also like the way the trousers are styled in the picture.

That's lovely - do you have one? I like Wyse & have some dresses & knitwear (eBay/Vinted). I like the Byron-esque styling of the navy one - perfect for penning my next poem ... but the OP might like the stripy T-shirt version, it being more casual.

Also, re the security thing, I almost always wear a plain vest below shirts, jumpers etc - so maybe that helps?!

Re footwear, OP, I would wear chunky ankle boots in autumn/winter with the barrel leg trousers. Something like these. I have a version of the lace-up Zadig & Voltaire ones & love them. Thinking of getting a pair of the Esska ones too!

And with the wide-leg cords, smart trainers or pointed flats. Loafers or brogues would work with either pair of trousers?

These are a couple of Boden images that I thought might be useful, broadly. Both tops are tucked in!

I do fitted on top if barrel is on the bottom I wore a flat pair of Mary Jane patent shoes with a pair of sheer socks and looked as cool/edgy as any 60 year old Granny could be!

I’ve got the v-neck in rust and wear it with a print Palome shirt. Love your description of a “Byron-esque” style.

oberuber · 25/09/2026 05:16

White shirt preferably male cut, tight brown leather belt.
I would go for the Chanel look of the 1930s.

FallenFigs · 25/09/2026 20:57

I could do the shirt look, I’ll try and find one. With accompanying sleeveless jumper.

whilst we’re at it, where should these trousers sit? I did buy two lengths. The shorter length sits where they do in the M&S images. It does take a bit a of getting used to, the ankle grazing thing. But that is trendy now, yes? I feel like the long are ‘90s long - too long?

I am also now stalking Wyse on Vinted.

My barrel legs (Toast not M&S) are above the ankle - I think they'd look odd any longer. In contrast, wide-legged trousers should be properly long.

FallenFigs · 25/09/2026 21:16

Oh hang on. So, the barrel legs I bought I’m happy with at regular/ankle graze.

the wide leg cords (which are in an image above) are the ones I’m debating over. But if they should be properly long, then I need the long length. They are ankle skim in the image though?

Is it the lovely navy & rust blouse ...?

I havent bought from Palome - & won't be unless (until??!!!) I lose some weight, sadly! But I like the look of quite a lot on their website.

I love a billowing-sleeved shirt! Think it started in my early teens with Adam Ant ... In fact, I've just remembered that a "poet sleeve" is an actual style.

The chocolate ones are - worn with loafers & socks. I don't like it. It reminds me of my teens - when shops didn't make things as long as nowadays. And I'd fall in love with a pair of wide trousers & they would be too short & look ridiculous!

(When I was about 18 I eventually got a local seamstress to make me a pair of the widest pleat-front dark red velvet trousers to a Vogue pattern - God I loved them!!)

The navy ones are worn longer. Much better!

The wide leg ones should be long.
I like these tops from Uniqlo with baggier bottoms. But also boxier knitwear that sits on the waist band.
I wear trainers most of the time, usually Adidas spezials or similar. For boots, I have some chunky chelsea boots that are slim on the ankle, and a lace up pair so also slim on the ankle. Also, the tops of the boots should be covered by trousers imo.
