What should I wear to a school TA interview as plus size?

Need help please. Have a job interview for TA/LSA at a local school.

All my clothes are casual!! I have a daily uniform of leggings + top or else super casual dresses, depending on the weather.

I am late 40s, plus size and tall!

I'm quite hourglass, I do have a waist, but the tops of my legs are huge.

i'm quite happy to buy something but I don't know where to start. I have lots of blouses/shirts, but I normally pair them with leggings, so bigger/looser top and tighter bottoms. I bought some wide leg trousers today which are quite nice, but paired with looser tops is making me look bigger than I actually am!

I tried a dress with black tights and ankle boots, that looked okay but I'm not 100% sold, it's just about 3 inches longer than I would like. I only have two days left to shop...

Any advice welcome please...

Be gentle, I'm not a follower of fashion at all, I'm a leggings, converse and T-shirt girl, if not that it's a jumper dress tights and docs 🙈

I do get dressed up to go out, but that's all sparkly 😂🤷🏼‍♀️🙈

Definitely layers! I teach in secondary and today, I started the day on yard duty in raincoat, cardi, scarf, thin knit jumper, and hi-vis. Shed the layers as the day went on, it was warm this afternoon!
Good luck x

The green one shows far too much cleavage.

You have jumped the shark, as they say.

Ladies! I picked up both of these tops today and both look great with the wide leg trousers 👌🏼 so hopefully either will be ok. I think I'm going with my ballet pumps as the boots I have make me even taller than my ridiculous 5"11 height. I might even look for some different shoes tomorrow, maybe a loafer or a low wedge, but for now I have something workable - thanks again all 🙏🏼 (if the photos don't come up straight away they should follow shortly)

These tops are lovely! Hope the interview goes well!

@theblame standing up - no clevage.
bending over - highly likely everything on show. I had this conversation literally a couple of weeks ago with an employee (with a smallish cup size) and a similar top. I could tell her the colour, material and decorations on her bra after a meeting. Very awkward and very unprofessional.
a simple black vest would fix that though, its otherwise a lovely top!

Tbf I have fallen foul of this before as I can't bear wearing anything up to my neck and hadn't anticipated quite how physical my job role was going to be.

If you'll be spending some time in the classroom on interview I would lean toward the black and white top.

Sorry you said that you have a dress and black tights but that the dress is three inches longer than what you would like. What is the actual length of the dress? If it is below the knee I would go for that. No point buying clothes if you don't need to. I personally avoid wide leg trousers after tripping over them in front of a client.

The dress I bought is between knee and ankle, it's just a bit too frumpy for me, and looked weird with the boots and black tights, but looks equally weird with skin colour tights. Ideally I would've liked it just below the knee. The dress is also cheap material and I just don't love it - it was purchased in a panic 😂

Wide leg trousers, a smart new round neck or shallow v t shirt and a smart open cardigan. I used to line manage TAs and that’s their uniform!

OhcantthInkofaname · 24/09/2026 20:03

Semi fitted tops from the collar bone to the elbow, leggings or trousers loose fitting, skirts / dresses at the knee. You want things that are comfortable to move in. They keep things covered.

I should have added this to my above comment. Why since you knew you would be applying for jobs did you not have a suitable wardrobe assembled?

A - I've been applying for many types of jobs, I have both School and admin experience. Interviews for those two areas would require completely different interview outfits and I don't have the money to waste on both unless absolutely needed.

B - in my head I had a few things that would work, but when I tried them on they just didn't.

C - I've been applying for jobs for multiple months and literally haven't had one single response until now, after a few weeks of complete radio silence it wasn't really top of my list to make sure I had an interview outfit ready.

D - I'm not perfect 🤷🏼‍♀️

I didn't get the job 😞
There were six people interviewing for the same position. They called and said I did really well and it was between myself and one other candidate, but they just had slightly more polished responses to the interview questions. Glass of wine for me now! 😞

@iwishiwasonacruise

I've just left working in a secondary school.

TBH I'd say enjoy your wine and your weekend and congratulate yourself on dodging a massive bullet!

I’d keep it simple and go with something that still feels like you. A blouse tucked into the wide-leg trousers will work well.
