Comfortable but high quality jeans with stretch, for a middle-aged waist?!!

Help. For the last year I’ve been living in M&S mom fit jeans. They are very comfy as they are generous on the waist and have a decent amount of stretch for every day wear….

BUT they look really crap now - baggy at the knees and shabby! Caught myself in the mirror and thought no, this will never do!!

I want to upgrade to a better quality pair, but still retain the comfort factor on my middle age waist (I’m 44, 5’7, size 10, but get awful bloating, so can’t cope with anything too rigid)

Has anyone come across a quality pair of jeans that have some stretch in the waistband? Probably barrel fit, Mum fit or straight fit (I have an active day and find wide legs get in the way too much!)

I’m happy to pay ££ for the right pair that I can wear every day

Thanks style queens! 🙏

Levis wide leg 318.

just amazing. They come up big

notnorman · 22/09/2026 17:40

Ps they’re not ‘wide wide’

Popfan · 22/09/2026 17:41

Next jeans are excellent, a really wide range of all different styles and shades, very comfortable and also extremely reasonably priced.

Halara all their jeans & trousers are so comfy. I’ve always had a big tummy and suffer chronic pain so clothes can feel really uncomfortable and painful but the Halara jeans are so soft and lite weight and fit my very bloated body.

Try me and em if you’re happy to pay more. They do most shapes. Here is the straight ones,

I have two pairs of the leg elongator ones linked below. If you’re willing to loom at another shape, and they are the best jeans I’ve ever had, so so flattering on and look smart and expensive. They are cotton, but it’s the first non Lycra/elastane jeans I’ve had that are fantastic. soft to wear, give with your body but hold their shape and the cut is something else.

Ambela jeans do exactly what you’re asking for - got to be quick when they restock though as they get snapped up very quickly! Also agree with the recommendation for Halara - they aren’t really proper denim but very very comfy. Much cheaper than Ambela, too. https://ambela.com/collections/straight-leg-jeans

Thanks - Levi’s is an interesting shout, I’ve never tried them and maybe it’s time! £90 is spendy but also not crazy so I can give them a go :)

I loved my M&S jeans but the long lasting quality on their stuff is just not good enough these days :(

To be fair the jeans I’ve had were only about £40…but I never intended to partake in ‘fast fashion’!
I expect them to last years, not a year…

I would just try an array of M&S ones! There’s plenty to choose from but some are more stretchy than others. Mine never give at the knees. I quite like fairly standard straight ones.

I agree, the stretch and quality of denim in Levi jeans is excellent. There are so many styles too.

Also came here to say Halara.

Huge range of styles and the most comfortable waist bands.

You get 20% off at La Redoute with code SAVE as well.
And I've put my order through Quidco.

I was in Sainsbury’s today and saw these dark denim elasticated waist barrel legs. I’d have bought them if they’d have had my size, sold out online too. They were great quality and looked way more pricey than the £20 price

Tocada wide leg jeans. Absolute godsend for my middle age menopausal tum!

I really like Mint Velvet jeans, particularly their comfort stretch ones

PaperPanama · 22/09/2026 21:21

I find that Lands End corduroy jeans fit perfectly, have enough stretch to be comfy all day, and last really well. I haven't tried their denim jeans, but LE are generally reliable good quality. And they have frequent sales.

NCTDN · 22/09/2026 21:22

I love love love my Halara jeans and won’t wear anything else now.

Growlybear83 · 22/09/2026 21:33

I swear by PerfectJeans. They come in a huge range of sizes, styles, and colours, and are the most comfortable jeans I've ever worn.

letshavetea · 22/09/2026 21:36

I second Levi’s jeans. I like the bootcut. They look and feel great.

notnorman · 22/09/2026 22:00

I bought my Levi’s from Vinted second hand. I’ve worn them almost every day since March apart from the couple of weeks when it was too hot for jeans. They still look absolutely perfect.

Brandywhine · 22/09/2026 23:07

I keep seeing Halara jeans recommended, but I actually saw someone wearing a pair tonight and I thought the waistband looked dreadful - reminiscent of the maternity jeans I had 30 years ago.

SisterMaryLuke · 23/09/2026 12:29

If you like jeans with plenty of stretch then they will lose shape and go baggy at the knee and bum - this is because of the elastane. The less elastane the better they stay in shape and will also last longer - 1%, 2% at most.

HostaCentral · 23/09/2026 12:35

I had a terrible experience with high elastine Levis...... They lasted a year before going ripply and baggy at the crotch seam. Was very disappointed considering the price.

I have moved away from too much stretch tbh. I prefer the held in feeling of old fashioned jeans and am now seeking out vintage high waisted.
