M&S jeans...12 way too small and 14 way too big...we need a 13

So I ordered from Vinted some size 14 wide leg jeans in 2 different colours from different sellers from M&S and they are quite roomy and too big around crotch and so I sold and got some size 12's in different colours and they are miles too small. Anyone else find this that there needs to be a size 13 haha.

There use to be. That said, I can try on 2 size 12s in M&S in different colours but the same style and they done for the same! Clothes sizing is mad. How it’s been washed will also affect it slightly.

Duckies · 17/09/2026 15:32

Next do odd sizes for some jeans. And levis etc do 29 inches, 31 inches.

I think it may be body shape because as my weight has changed I have wished for a size 13 or size 11 but never found the even sizes quite right!

funny you should say this as it was the black jeans in the wide leg range that were wayyyy smaller in the 12 than the blue. The 14 in the black I think I can wear but the 14 in the blue is huge around crotch and bum. So bizarre.

We absolutely do. That would be perfect for me. Its a bit like shoe sizes. Im 5 and a half.

hotlipshoulihan32 · 17/09/2026 20:55

Yes absolutely, M&S sizes are wild!!

TheGardenPond · 17/09/2026 21:32

Yep. I’m a 9 top and 11 bottom. So annoying.

imnottoofussed · 17/09/2026 21:42

Yes I just had to abandon the idea of getting new work trousers from m and s because all the 12s were too small and the 14s too big.

i ended up with Zara size large and h and m size 14

GellerYeller · 17/09/2026 21:47

There was a thread on here in the past where someone explained black and blue washes in the same size garment come up differently sized. It’s to do with the dye reaction shrinking the fabric IIRC.
Next have some jeans in size 9, 11 etc. online.

Anjelika · 17/09/2026 22:04

Completely agree. I have recently tried on loads of jeans from different places and, in all cases, ordered or tried a size 8 and a size 10. Size 10 drowned me and size 8 I could barely do up! I need a size 9!

Norwaygirl · 17/09/2026 22:06

M and S petite trousers are way too long forme at 5ft1.

dreamingofgoodhair · 17/09/2026 23:19

It’s different styles. In M&S I can be a 10 - 14 depending on the styles. They change the lengths as well. I am 5.9. I used to have long now I have long or regular.

I’m 5’2 and resigned myself to trouser shopping in summer when I can get cropped length which just fit me as normal length! M&S do some styles in extra short though which usually works for me too, but they are often sold out fast online.

PlantainArama · 18/09/2026 10:32

I find this with Lucy and Yak especially, and sometimes Oliver Bonas. On several occasions I have tried a pair that say they are 14 (L&Y) or 12 (OB) and where the actual waist measurement is almost an inch less than the sizing chart suggests. Then I try the exact same style and colour in 16 (L&Y) or 14 (OB) only to find them huge and that the waist measurement is larger than the sizing chart suggests, meaning that the difference between consecutive sizes is over 3 inches which seems ridiculous!

I thought I'd struck gold ordering Abercrombie and Fitch off vinted which have sizes that say "33" or "32" or "31" etc. only to find that a pair of A&F size "33" have not a 33 inch waist but a 37 inch waist. Wtf?!

Nottodaty · 18/09/2026 10:38

I ordered 2 pairs of jeans from hush - both a size 14.

One pair was massively too small (I couldn’t even attempt to do the button up) the other was a cozy fit ( I wouldn’t be able to wear them for a meal)

I ordered a size 16 in the second pair.,,,to big.

I’ve only just got used to being a size 14…I can’t already be a 16 :(
Back to M&S and as usual I need a size 13…or just wear a 14 with a belt.

Makes online ordering really difficult at times.

You can get 13s in next

TragicMuse · 18/09/2026 10:46

This is partly why I’ve switched to Levi’s. I can get the waist size I want in combination with the right leg length.

And the cinch style have a tab that means you can fit the hip and pull in the waist.

I can really recommend going to a Levi’s shop, if you can, and trying on every style you like to get the size you want.

Then you can either spring for the expensive ones or get them from vinted/ebay. One pair of decent jeans is a way better investment than loads of ones that are no better than ok.

Gooseegando · 18/09/2026 10:49

I have this a lot. I am a size 10 in tops and dresses but a 10 in jeans feels too tight to me (loose skin) but 12 often gape at waist. But I just get 12s cause I'd rather that than feel too tight.

Yes I buy cropped or ankle grazers as full length trousers too. As you say some trousers they do in extra short but they sell out really fast. I now buy work trousers from Bonmarche because they do several different lengths. 27 inch are perfect for me.

notanothernamesurely · 18/09/2026 10:58

Yes and a 9 please!

Sunbringer · 18/09/2026 10:59

M&S have issues with consistency. If the size 8 of a pair doesn’t fit me I just grab another size 8 and usually one is more comfortable. Their manufacturers aren’t perfect.

Haven’t seen them in next for years, decades even.

Sorry no I didn’t look online to check, I thought you meant in the shop. Good to know you can get them.

Myremoteislost · 18/09/2026 14:12

I have jeans between size 12 and size 18. It's frustrating that sizes are so inconsistent.
