Curling Shoulder length hair

hby9628 · 16/09/2026 14:45

I’ve just had my hair cut shoulder length and want to be able to put some lose waves though it. I’ve tried watching YouTube videos and I can do my left side okay but my right side is a disaster. I’m right handed. Has anybody got any tips? I’ve got an event next Thursday I want to master this technique for!

Curl both sides away from the face so you go opposite for the right hand side.
lots of tutorials on YouTube.

For loose waves i just plait my hair while wet after washing and leave it to dry naturally over night. I have foam curlers for proper curls, again just do it wet after washing and leave to dry naturally.

@momager22yes I’ve tried some
tutorials. I’m just not great although I’m wondering if my straighteners aren’t the best. They are quite old

Curl away from your face on both sides then alternate the curl direction with each section back. Dyson Air Wrap is the best tool.

@ToadRagefoam curlers are a good idea but I can’t use them for this particular event due to logistics unfortunately. Sounds ridiculous I know but it’s a works event & there’s drinks the night before too and I don’t expect I’ll manage to put them in that night!

Firstly, practise with them cold so you get the technique without frying your hair. I could never do it with straighteners but got my hairdresser to give me an in person tutorial for my hair because she knows it best. I use a curling wand as I find that so much easier to use.

See if you can borrow a curling wand from someone you know. Or better yet see if one of your mate's will style your hair for the night.

Honestly, I could never get the technique right. I have a Tymo Curlpro now and it is like magic.

Skatefordinner · 16/09/2026 16:56

I gave up on trying to do it myself. I just couldn’t get it right. I bought a babyliss thing Called deep waves or something. It takes ten minutes and people always ask me how I got my waves/ curls. It’s very low maintenance

@fluffbluethat curler looks good thanks for the tip off.
@Skatefordinnerthank you I’ll take a look at that

I was going to suggest the Tymo curler too, very easy to use

IwanttoWFH · 16/09/2026 19:43

Make sure you go round the back of your head.
So, for the left side of your head, hold the straighteners/curling tongs in your right hand, and come round the back of your head. Grab your hair in your left hand. Do the opposite for the other side

Nitgel · 16/09/2026 19:44

Heated rollers every time. Easy to put in and curls last if you use something like mousse.

hby9628 · 17/09/2026 07:02

I’ve ordered. Tymo from Amazon to try. Figure if it’s no good Amazon are easy enough for returns. Will try it out tomorrow 🤞

Hope you love it!

hby9628 · 17/09/2026 21:40

So I was too impatient to wait until tomorrow to use the Tymo curler so gave it a quick go. It wasn’t perfect for my first attempt and my hair is a bit chaotic as I was trying to curl it using straighteners yesterday but I’m impressed. It definitely made curls & it was easy to use.
im going to wash my hair tomorrow morning so its all straight again rather than a frizzy mess & then try it tomorrow evening. Im excited! This could be a game changer

@fluffblue@minnowonthesaydo you use any product on your hair before the curler?

@Nitgelwhich ones do you have? Just spotted the remington ones are down to £35 on Amazon which seems reasonable. These would probably be good for if I had a bit more time.

I use this heat shield spray. It can be used on damp or dry hair if just refreshing.
Most importantly the first item on the ingredients list wasn’t ’alcohol denat’ which just dries my hair out.

I use Palmers coconut oil spray. It was cheap but actually seems to work well for me. Has heat protector.

Glad the Tymo worked for you. I find it often looks good the next day as well when the curls have dropped a bit, which is nice. I'll re-curl a few strands only and it looks like a bouncy blow dry!

hby9628 · 18/09/2026 18:27

25 minutes and I have fabulous curls using the TYMO. I’m made up! Thanks for everyone’s help x
