Winter work tops and layers to wear with long skirts

I wear long skirts for work a lot in the winter. With good boots.

I recently acquired (for free!) 4 new to me skirts. Two are baby cord and fluted (one plain purple, one brown with a small amount of embroidery also in brown). The other two are A line plaid, one red, one blue. All are heavy natural materials vintage perfect for warmth in winter and smart.

But I don't know what to wear with them. My wardrobe is full of simple thin V-neck jumpers picked up from Debenhams about 10 years ago. They are looking tired I wear them with vests under for warmth. It's cold in my office (the air con is artic) so I thought layering might be nice. I currently have no long sleeve blouses or shirts.

I'm looking for ideas for 5 items to go with the skirts, maybe shirts, blouses, jumpers, cardigans a mix? to see me though the winter. I am petite, busty size 12. Budget is probably £250 total am happy to shop second hand.

Any ideas. Thanks

Thick long sleeve tops with a smart cardigan or overshirt? Or is that too casual

Take yourself to Uniqlo and choose some nice new jumpers!

Holdinguphalfthesky · 14/09/2026 21:16

You like slim fit jumpers and they’ll work with the shape of the skirts. I have three long sleeve t shirts from H&M that do stirling work in the winter. Pp mentioned Uniqlo, I just got a pair of their trousers on Vinted and very impressed with the quality, so they’re probably worth a look.

for your budget, I would get a few long sleeve t shirts as a layer (I have black, wine, and olive from H&M and then black & leopard from Manners London, with little roll necks, for colder days or under shirts).

Look for shirts you like on Vinted, and also browse a few places for jumpers. My best Vinted buys have been when I know exactly what I want, so look around first. Also I have found some quirky things, like a shirt with a ruffled placket. It’s a heavy washed black cotton so it’s a bit faded looking and sort of rock-chick colour reminiscent of jeans, but when I wear a rollneck under it it looks sort of Victorian-librarian, which I quite like.

Do you have an idea of what sort of jumpers, shirts etc you like? There is a dark academia thread with some nice suggestions, you might get some ideas there too.

I love a good thick wool skirt in winter and wear them a lot. I have my looks saved in my wardrobe inventory app so can dig up some of them from previous winters.

I found a couple I saved. I like scarves and I often wear plain wool henley tops to show the scarves off. These tops are quite tight and I wear them tucked into the skirts with an undershirt underneath.

I’m not great at tracking the use of tights but I usually wear opaque ones with high wool content and some pattern (ribbed etc) in winter.

I have these tops in lots of different colours. I wear a cashmere cardigan over them when it's cold.

I also knit some of my jumpers - I'm quite short in the body and like them to hit my skirts just below the waist. Cropped jumpers are getting easier to find these days in shops though.

Thanks for the suggestions all, especially links and pictures.

I wouldn't say I like my old jumpers, they were in when I bought them years ago and haven't fallen apart so I haven't updated!

Summer I wear a nice tailored selection of Hobbs type dresses.

I would love a ribbed turtle neck, but cant due to the short waist and big boobs it looks dreadful.

Quite like a chunky knit, but not sure it is smart enough for work.

Fancy a silk blouse, but not sure.

I used to have a lovely collection of cropped chunky knit jumpers from years ago but they all got out of shape so I got rid of them.

I'd quite like an update to the wardrobe as bored with a plain coloured thin V neck jumper with a vest under.

I like the ribbed polo, but probably more casual, and buttons always pull round the chest.

The seasalt is probably too casual for my office.

I'm stuck in a rut!

This is similar to a shirt I have- mine is washed black, and no collar, and I found it on Vinted- but it offers a more interesting look than a standard shirt.

Thanks for all the links @Holdinguphalfthesky the gist appeals most, so I'll take a look at the website in more detail. I love monsoon but they don't work for shortie. I went in the other day and one of their age 15 dresses was too big! The studio one would make me look square due to my shape. I like the zara items you linked, but sadly despite wanting a change I think I'm too conventional 😓
