Maroon straight leg trousers when you have a belly? Can you style this?

Hi fashionistas, i am looking for some maroon trousers to go with a frilled pink top similar to below. I tend to live in wide legged trousers for home but im going to the office for a big meeting and want to look more stylish.

Im a size 16/18 and my weight goes mainly on my stomach so i tend to wear a tight top and cropped jacket at home. Leaving things loose makes me feel even bigger.

Am thinking stretchy, straight legged trousers? Could anyone give tips on styling for me, the trousers, the shoes? Do i tuck in? Im a bit paranoid of looking mumsy as I work in the media. Everyone looks fab!

Shoes wise I have some stan smiths ive never worn but could get loafers or something else (maybe leopard print!)

I carry my weight on my stomach too so tend to go for trousers (with a zip) that are slightly too large so don’t pull in at the waist accentuating my tummy. I either loosely tuck in or wear a top that finishes around the waist band.

Love the pink shirt & maroon trousers-leopard print loafers would work really well.

That’s a great outfit, and I agree with pp that leopard print loafers or flats would work well with it. I think the trousers are fine, but you should make sure the blouse hangs well. It should lightly skim your chest area and fall to around/just below mid-abdomen. The proportions of the blouse will be important for the whole outfit.

I just found some pink sparkle knit trainers in my cupboard, is that old fashioned?

@thelastcakeismine the trousers got delivered yesterday. I find i get bloated so my sizes can vary from a 16 in skirts to a 20 in trousers. Im just not sure I want to keep a size 20 because I feel too negative about the actual number!

OK, but how do they fit? Are you saying you ordered a 20 or you think you should have done?

As you know, it's much better to have a little extra give in your clothes than too little. The current state of fashion is quite loose, such that tight trousers look even worse than they have done - camel toe used to be just one of those things, now it had better be activewear or it's "OMG, should we TELL her??!"

The ones you've chosen have 2% elastane. This means they'll forgive a bit of bloat, not that you should stretch them to the max to get them on. How does your nice pink shirt hang on you, and what length is it?

The Baukjen model's wearing it half-tucked. I dislike this look, though it works in the photos. If you've mastered the stylish untuck, go for it! If not, it's probably best to leave it loose.

I prefer animal print shoes to sparkly pink for the look you're aiming for.

Btw, I've got M&S bottoms in sizes 12 to 20. It's not me or you, it's the ludicrous state of mass-produced sizing! Same with leg lengths - I'm both short and tall 🙄

thelastcakeismine · 16/09/2026 07:22

I’d forget about the number tbh & wear whichever size looks & feels better. As @GarlicSomething said, sizes are most definitely not uniform these days.

Did you get the loafers? Pink sparkly trainers will go but leopard print would
be better.

Come back & let us know how the whole
outfit works.

Hi all, I ended up returning the loafers (sizing wasn’t right) then the trousers as I managed to just wear some dark blue jeans and some super star trainers. I felt the trousers made me look bigger than I wanted.
