Winter boots

I had a nasty fall on ice last winter and broke my wrist. I’m determined to be extra cautious this year. Can anybody recommend any boots with really good grip? I really don’t care what they look like. I’m a size 4, so might even be able to get away with children’s so long as they’re not pink and girly.

Also, what about the things that slip over boots for more traction - any recs for those? I won’t need to walk miles in them, just up to the shops etc.

Under £100 ideally.

I have snow boots and hiking boots but neither provided any help in Helsinki. My sil has ordered these clip things they all use for us for our next winter trip. I’ll find out the name. It’s was sheet ice on many pavements

I've walked about a mile at a time in mine - mainly icy but bare patches, and it was fine. Also put them over hiking boots to walk on Lake District fells in icy weather.

I had a fall about 7 weeks ago and broke my elbow and badly damaged my knee needing 19 stitches. I am terrified to walk on dry pavements even now, and I dread to think what I will be like come winter.

You can probably find the different colours if you search, I chose the green because it was quite a bit cheaper, but that was last year.

There are no boots with a good grip. Try ice/snow cleats or grippers from Decathlon.

I bought a pair on Sorrel boots and found they were quite slippy on ice. Very disappointing, however they are warm and great in wet and snow

Yaktrax are the answer

Edit: have seen concerns about taking them off. I've always found them straight forward to ease off when going into shops, and they completely stop falls.

Do Yaktrax work on black ice though? Where there is no depth to the ice just a dangerously slippery pavement.

Yak trax are great for ice and snow but not good on polished terazzo flooring - I slid off a bus wearing them once. There are great if you are going somewhere like work where you can sit down and put them on - easy to take off but can be fiddly to get on especially with cold fingers.

Stopped me breaking bones last year in the ice after the snow though!
