Outfit for ABBA boat party?

I’m going to an ABBA brunch type party, it should be warm and sunny. I want to wear something that isn’t fancy dress and that I have a chance of wearing again. Would this work?

Absolutely, it’s gorgeous!

MyManinCaracas · 10/09/2026 03:10

That really is gorgeous! Lucky you!

OneTake · 10/09/2026 09:39

Gorgeous. Couple of full length tiny plaits at the front of your hair and you're away.

Floisme · 10/09/2026 10:08

It's lovely but I have to say, I'm struggling to see much of an Abba connection. If you really want to get into the spirit of things, I think you'll have to work quite hard with the accessories and make up, e.g. white knee high boots, or a poncho over the top or, at the very least, blue eye shadow and an Agnetha wig,

@Floisme- perfect feedback, that’s exactly what I’m hoping to avoid. I just want something fun, that I feel nice in that won’t get thrown in the bin the moment I’m home or I can wear for more drinks after.

What shoes for maximum dancing, minimum blisters?

Op, your dress is in the spirit of Abba, it is splendid as it is. I have never checked but an Abba type wig might be expensive and it would be terrible if everyone went for that idea. Have you got a pair of sandals that are comfortable for dancing in .You will be able to wear that lovely dress again. Enjoy the event OP.

StylishAndBeautiful · 10/09/2026 17:56

Lots of blue eyeshadow and you'll be fine.

How about some Esska's. The platform makes them pretty 70s like. I wore some glittery ones to a 70s party myself actually!

LethargeMarg · 10/09/2026 18:35

i think it needs to be a longer dress or a play suit/jump suit type thing to be ABBA
the dress shown is lovely but other than looking a bit like something from mamma mia it isn’t really ABBA
i think you need sparkly
i also think ABBA style is generally not the kind of thing that can be easily reworn as it’s very 70s and not particularly stylish or subtle!

Not very ABBA but of a cop out

Cyclingforcake · 10/09/2026 18:41

I went to the ABBA museum in the summer and learnt that their clothes were deliberately flamboyant and difficult to wear off stage to avoid a clothes tax in Sweden in the 70s. Theatrical costumes were exempt apparently. And Frida made a lot of the early costumes herself.

PhaedraTwo · 10/09/2026 19:14

It's a lovely dress and you'll get lots of
wear out of it but it's not remotely in the spirit of Abba.

There are very few pictures of Frida and Agnetha wearing anything that short (Frida is far more likely to be in long skirts) and when they did, it was with boots and Agnetha was more likely to wear shorts.

Thats even less ABBA
you need big flares, platform shoes or a sparkly maxi dress
both these dresses are lovely but they are not the theme at all

madaboutpurple · 11/09/2026 09:34

OP's first message was she wants to wear the dress again. Her clothes do not have to be full of Abba styles and most would not fit the scope of being able to wear it again.

Floisme · 11/09/2026 09:45

If the op prefers to wear a pretty dress that's perfectly understandable and I very much doubt anyone will object. But the question was about whether or not it fits an Abba theme and I just can't see how either of them do or how they're even 'in the spirit'. As a previous poster says, flares or a maxi dress could work and be wearable afterwards.

toottootbeepbeeep · 11/09/2026 13:32

To be clear, it’s an event with an ABBA tribute. Not a fancy dress party

the title says ‘boat’.

if there is any climbing onto a boat you might want to wear flats and trousers/shorts. there could be a high gangway if it’s high or low tide.

Bjorn again?

Ah OK, that changes my view then. Just wear a lovely dress that you like and enjoy the music.
