What beauty maintenance do you do?

I was watching Olivia Atwood The Price of Perfection.

It got me thinking about the amount of beauty treatments are normal these days and whether they really make much difference.

I get my hair cut and coloured twice a year
Nails BIAB every 3 weeks
Brows threaded and tinted every 3 weeks
I I use Dermatica every night and a basic Nivea night cream
I use La Roche Posay serum every morning along with a Nivea moisturiser. Did buy an under eye caffeine cream but it doesn’t make any difference in my opinion
i now use brow serum each night to try to thicken my eyebrows
i fake tan once a week and moisturise with E45 lotion the rest of the week
I I wash my hair twice a week and straighten it I use heat protection and I also put on hair masks when I wash my hair
I wear make up 3 times a week
I use a collagen face mask once in a while when I can be bothered.

It seems like a lot writing on it all down, I’ve never had any cosmetic procedures. I don’t think my body is in to bad shape but y face is collapsing a bit. I’m 42.

I have my hair cut every 7 weeks. I put some Nivea on my face at night. I shower every day. And that's about it. No nail stuff. No brow stuff. No makeup, hair dye, fake tan. No plucking or waxing. I all sounds like too much faff to me!

My trouble is I’d look like I’d been dug up if o didn’t.

My eyebrows are so fair I look like I haven’t got any and my skin is so fair it’s practically blue.

have my hair cut 2 or 3 times a year, washed daily or every couple of days as needed
wash my face with basic facewash and moisturise twice a day

Feel like surface stuff is all a money-making con. Creams cannot impact your skin at a molecular level.

I stay out of the sun, if can be avoided. Wear factor 50 - hydrate but not excessively. And I use moisturiser or oil-based products as often as needed throughout the day so that I don't have dry, taut skin, more prone to 'easily crease / wrinkle'.

I avoid unnecessary, exaggerated facial expressions because back in my 20s, I noticed certain forehead lines were taking so much longer to disappear than in my teens. I don't refuse to move my face at all(!) I just don't go as over the top as I used to.

Diet and exercise plus genetics. Diet actually will impact your cells internally. If I have understood correctly. Genetics is an enormous factor and sadly, that will be the dealbreaker when it comes to aging. But if we eat right and promote muscle strength: we can definitely age the best we can for our unique genetic templates.

Oh and consistent good-quality sleep. Cannot stress enough the importance of going to sleep when tired and not forcing yourself to stay awake. That is the single biggest aging factor I have experienced (for me).

I probably do look like I've been dug up! But I can't spare the time or expense to do better, and I wouldn't have a clue where to start. I focus on a good diet and try to keep active, physically and mentally. To me, that's more important.

Ah! I forgot the chin hair. I have just one which I notice about every 8 weeks and then pluck out. I'm sure other people notice it sooner but nobody's ever mentioned it!

I don’t look like I’m high maintenance, but by hokey, when written down, I am!

brows, every month. They are monsters.
hair cut twice a year, colour myself every couple of months, hairdresser does twice a year
Anti frizz hair treatment at salon 3 times a year
dermatologist once a year to burn off sun spots
botox on 11s 3 times a year

at home daily, body scrub, moisturise, perfume, cleanser, vit c, moisturiser, sunblock, eyelash serum
once a week face mask
teeth whitening home kit 4 times a year
do nails weekly at home

2 strength classes a week, one yoga

I look like a very ordinary low maintenance 56 year old woman.

KatharinaRosalie · 09/09/2026 20:06

I do quite a bit of heavy maintenance to be low maintenance rest of the time.
Eyebrow and eyeliner tatoo, eyelash extensions (tasteful, brown, short -they don't look fake but simply look like I have great lashes). Skincare, LED mask - so I don't need make up, my skin is in great condition. Just finished invisalign. Some botox and filler.

So daily it's pretty much just wash and go.

Oh and healthy food, alcohol very rarely. A lot of strenght training so I look as they like to call it, 'toned'. Makes a huge difference.

Fatsnowflake · 09/09/2026 20:07

Factor 50 daily
PT once a week but that's for physical health as much as anything
Tretinoin three times a week
BIAB every three weeks
I box dye my greys
Botox occasionally
I don't find it a lot really. I drink too much wine which probably doesn't do my appearance any good.

Autumn38 · 09/09/2026 20:12

Eyebrows tinted and shaped at home as needed. Recent addition is nails every three weeks, hair cut every 6 weeks.

daily I wash face, followed by serum and facial oil. High spf in the morning.

wash and straighten hair. Makeup any day I need to be presentable. Toe nails ALWAYS painted if on show. Legs epilated. Jewellery is left on so always have jewellery on and petfume when I remember.

I look like I’m low maintenance for sure 🤣

I’m definitely upping my game now that I’m early 40’s and have a bit more money to spend. It has goven me a nice boost over the last while to invest time and money in looking and feeling good.

I get my hair highlighted and cut 4 times a year, and do my own roots in between with a semi permanent to cover greys. Wash and blowdry it 3 times a week.

I use tretinoin maybe twice a week in the evenings, and a glycolic acid toner once or twice also. SPF everyday before my 5 minute make up routine in the morning.

I’ll be getting some ipl/ lasers done to counteract some some damage on my face over the next few months. Also might try something like ultherapy/ RF to see if it does anything worthwhile.

I do Pilates classes twice a week, would love to do more but too tired this time of year.

Got my nails done as a birthday treat recently and would like to keep it up, but don’t know if I have the patience to sit for 2 hours while they do the shellac stuff on a regular basis.

I will also be getting some cosmetic dentistry done over the next few months which I have to save for.

I would also like to get a massage done every month or soas a treat, so have to look into that.

I’d love to do fake tan but it always seems to turnout horrible on me, so I don’t bother anymore.

MyManinCaracas · 09/09/2026 20:21

I have to do a lot, or at least it feels like a lot, but I love it.

Manicure, clear polish every 3 weeks
Pedicure, every other month
Eyebrows, shape and tint every 6 weeks
Hair, cut and highlights every 6 weeks
Botox, 3 times a year
ZO moisturiser and tret every evening
Cerave face wash
SPF 50 every day

MildlyAnnoyed · 09/09/2026 20:49

I use a hyaluronic serum plus moisturiser for my face in the morning & occasionally retinol at night. I have my hair cut & coloured every 7 weeks. I have my eyebrows tattooed because they are incredibly sparse. I have Botox occasionally. I’ve had skin boosters once around 3 months ago. I rarely wear makeup. I have had cosmetic surgery following vast weight loss. It sounds an awful lot but I certainly wouldn’t say I require high maintenance.

GameOfJones · 09/09/2026 21:10

Hair - four appointments with the hairdresser a year.

Brows - powder brows topped up roughly every 18 months

Skin - vitamin C serum and SPF 50 every morning, retinol or acid toner in the evening plus a basic moisturiser

Shower - every day and always body lotion afterwards, hair washed every other day. Exfoliate and shave once a week.

Makeup - five minutes max a day. Tinted moisturiser, tinted lip balm, blush and mascara. Eyeliner, concealer and setting spray if I'm going out or to the office.

Health - I try to limit UPFs and eat whole foods 80% of the time. I do a yoga class once a week and enjoy walking but should do more exercise.

It's depressing to me reading these comments. Would men do, or be pressured into doing anything similar?
