Please explain trench coats to me

I need a new rain coat and was looking at trench coats but they don’t seem to have hoods which doesn’t seem very practical to me as I find umbrellas a dripping pfaff. I think I must be missing the point or maybe I should stick to rain coats but if so any recommendations would be appreciated- want to avoid beige and black

I just bought the Reiss one, lads.

Really like the mushroom colour, the petite reduces feel of all the flaps. Tis very slightly too short in the arms, but feel a jumpers sleeves will look fine peeping out.

One thing is I am having it tailored to slightly slim down the fabric round the legs, but that's normal for me in most coats - my legs are skinny and short compared to the rest of me. I really like it, and it's hooded. Obvs it is EXPENSIVE, but I have tried and returned many previously. This finally feels like THE ONE. Fingers crossed.

I disagree. A trench coat is usually double breasted, which adds width, long, which draws the eye downwards, has epaulette, which add width etc.
They don't really suit petite women.

And in my case hats are always too big for me and fly off my head at the smallest breeze.

Problem is in England it's never really the right temperature to wear one imo!

I have just realised one of the main reasons I don't like trench coats is because they remind me of my old school gaberdine mac! (photo is from Internet not mine)

Used to wear one to cover me up without overheating, and to look smarter when I was the youngest at work.
But don't bother now, a coat needs to have a hood, practical pockets and some warmth, plus ideally dark to avoid showing any marks and do school run to work.

Trench coats are to protect smarter clothes from wind and rain in conjunction with an umbrella when you don’t a full wool coat.

I used to have one in bottle green.

Op, I used to wear them when I was younger mainly as I found them stylish, especially to wear to the office - but now I wouldn’t get one unless it was like the sea salt coat mentioned above.

You can wear a hat with a trench coat. You used to be able to get them cleaned and re-proofed at enormous cost. I don't know if regular dry cleaners do it now. The shape will keep you dry down to the knees and you can button up the front and the storm collar.

My old dad used to have a riding mac, beige, of similar cut but with leg straps and a stiffer fabric. Might have been macintosh. I have only used jackets and accepted that I would get wet if it rained.

I still have one but don't need to be out in the rain much. They are stylish if you like the style,

I like a trench coat for in-between seasons and find they ‘smarten up’ an outfit. I have a beige one and a bright one. People seem to respond quite positively to me in my beige one, even though it was a cheaper brand.

If I am trying out a new style I often buy a cheap version from EBay before investing in something more expensive.

I’ve got a very old Burberry trencjcoat. Great but no food. Years ago when I was 18 I had a lovely almost full length ravy trench coat don’t think it had a hood but loved it. From Allders Croydon. Can’t recall name but was a classic.

ravy trench coat? @PigletJohn , might have been a navy trench coat with no hood but I quite like the idea of a starved ravy one.

I dom t think Burberry make their iconic trench with a hood. They made them for officers in the trenches in WW1 and were a rein resistant gaberdine invented by Thomas Burberry. I think respecting the heritage of the coats matters and if you want something with a hood, it’s not a traditional trench. However a Burberry is still iconic.

@YossarianC22 ,the coat is elegant and the hood jarrs a little but it would make it wearable and practical. On the whole I give it the thumbs up.
What colour are you getting?

Not sure - I’m quite brown/olive skinned and different browns either make me look like a small woodland creature or they can be quite flattering. I might play it safe with the navy

I like the taupe. Navy is practical though.

Yes, especially since it’s likely to spend quite a lot of time either being covered in mud, or generally abandoned in the passenger footwell of my car. I’m not a very good nice clothes-owner
