Size 18 afternoon tea at the savoy - help please

Hi, going for afternoon tea at The Savoy and needs some help please.

I’ve lost some weight but still a size 18, really struggled with fashion while I was bigger and don’t know what to wear now. I have wide leg black trousers and a black blazer I could potentially wear but not sure if that’s too business like and what I would wear on my feet.

I feel everything makes me look frumpy.

I also don’t have a massive budget. Any ideas gratefully received thanks.

oh I’m 5’3

That sounds fine, but I'd be wearing a white t shirt underneath with a small coloured scarf and a pair of chunky boots. Well done on the weight loss, but frumpiness isn't about weight, it's more about getting the right shape of jacket/ trousers /boots etc. Hope you have a lovely time xx

Would you consider a dress? This is massively reduced at the moment and they have size 18 in stock. You could wear a blazer with it.

Don’t wear black - you’ll look like staff!

a blazer is a lovely idea but in a colour you love

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 06/09/2026 20:24

Don’t Do the black, celebrate your weight loss instead of hiding. Saying that, I really like a shirt dress when I want to look smart but not too ‘evening’. I like this one from Crew clothing which comes in a few colours. I like the way this one is styled with a bit of colour in accessories. It’s not high fashion but these kind of dresses work well for lots of things, and if still losing weight- you can cinch in for a while.

Black isn’t necessarily very flattering and can make you look washed out. Do you like the above dress?

skiqueen20 · 06/09/2026 21:37

Thanks for the replies. I’m open to a dress but would prefer longer as even when I was a size 10 legs were chunky, still are. Also have a large bust so think that’s what makes me feel frumpy.

I do blue blazer that I’ve just tried on and that now fits me.

Is it during the summer? I would wear your blue blazer (assuming you mean navy) with white formal tailored trousers, which are tapered/carrot whatever the phrase is these days, nice little turn ups, with some navy loafers. Fresh.

Could wear a red blouse under the blazer for colour, red white and blue.

This is a baggy look which wouldnt suit a size 18 but this is the colour combo, nice.

Here are some longer dresses -

ETA these would look great with boots for autumn if you have boots, or could wear with any flats, and blazer over or a little crochet-knit type cardi depending how warm it is.

I agree, a longer dress would be great. I've bought a few lovely ones on Vinted for under £5. I'm the same size as you and think it's easier to feel nicely put together but not too smart in a dress.

skiqueen20 · 08/09/2026 19:49

Thanks for the ideas. I like the M&S trousers and the style of some of the dresses. Will get browsing tonight. Initially wasn’t sure if nice trainers would go with a longer dress or if they are unsuitable for the location.

Going the first weekend of October, fingers crossed the weather doesn’t get too wintery!

I’d check the dress code about trainers. Some places don’t allow them. Hope you find a nice dress.
