Solutions to keep hair dry in the rain

I have a new haircut and it does require a bit of styling every morning. My journey from my car to my place of work is about 10 mins. In 10 mins i can get soaked…

i do not want an umbrella because i keep losing them, they are wet and i cant put them in my bag.

i have not found a light winter coat i like with a hood.

what can i use to save my hair from the rain? (Not a fedora hat fan either…)

Many thanks

Upside down goldfish bowl?

A Rain Mate. Or just get better at not losing umbrellas and putting them to dry once you arrive at work or at home later if there's nowhere suitable at work.

SocksAndTheCity · 31/08/2026 09:53

+1 for Rain Mate. I keep meaning to get a couple of these so it's time I took my own advice.

I usually have one or two hotel shower caps kicking about in my bag too in case of a downpour (my hair isn't styled as such, but it's a pain in the arse if it gets wet as there's a lot of it) and because the elastic around them tends to be thin they don't leave marks on your head. I always have a headscarf on me too 👍

cannaethink · 31/08/2026 20:05

What about a waterproof hood? They’re usually knitted but there’s waterproof options too.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 31/08/2026 20:09

Does anyone remember the pleated plastic headscarves you opened out and tied under your chin? Women in the 50s always had one in their handbag!

PaperPanama · 31/08/2026 20:09

A rain bonnet.

Like this. Hilda Ogden, Hyacinth Bucket and Nora Batty would have loved them.

Get the kind of umbrella that has a zip up case and then it can go in your bag even when wet. Obviously it is better to dry them before putting away though… is there a reason you can’t get any old collapsible umbrella, dry it off in the workplace then put in your bag?

Thank you all for your suggestions but i am refusing to wear something my grandmother used to wear….!!
i bought a waterproof bucket hat from amazon instead.

i keep losing umbrellas (probably undiagnosed adhd) lets hope i can keep the hat!!

Thank you for that link! I’m a fan too. Really great way to keep a lovely hairstyle dry and easy to store away in a bag.

I remember both my Grans using rain mates in the 1970s in fact lots of wifies used rain mates and tartan heid scarfs.

Plastic bag with eye and mouth holes?

Thank you. This looks great! I might return the amazon hat and get this instead.

@Midlifecrisis2026 thank you for recommending the hairbrella!! Don’t love the name but love the product!!
ive used it twice already and it is perfect 👌
Roomy enough so my hair does not become all flat because it is squeezed and fashionable enough i am ok to go out and about with it and waterproof…. And satin-lined..!!! Also i can stuff it in my bag when i dont need it. Very pleased!!

That looks amazing! Would it fit a person with a big head and big hair?!

Fast800goingforit · 11/09/2026 17:24

You could just wear a coat with a hood. Or use an umbrella and not risk squashing your hair.

NolanChanceJustLikeTheWeatherNSoul · 11/09/2026 18:22

Viz style top tip
Choose a gloss paint colour you like
And paint your hair
Forever dry
Disclaimer..it may be a bastard to get off.

coolcahuna · 11/09/2026 18:36

@Midlifecrisis2026 loving the hairbrella! I've been looking at knitted versions but this looks so much better

It is roomy enough for me but my haircut is not voluminous. Some waves on a straight bob (but the waves take me ages to do!!)
i would think that it could accommodate curls up to a point. Maybe if you go on their website, you can see pictures of models and decide whether it is roomy enough for your hair.

Damnit - I keep saying to myself I need to stop buying stuff I see on here. Hairbrella due to arrive on 24th Sept! 🤓

LadyChilli · 11/09/2026 20:51

I really want a hairbrella now too but I often find hoods too big and they cover my eyes. Can anyone who already has one comment if that is likely?

tostaky · Yesterday 07:55

@LadyChilli it doesnt cover my eyes. The “bigness” is at the back to accomodate the hair.

Does the slippiness of the satin not make it slide off your head, @tostaky?
