Skin care for spotty 10 yo

Dd is just turned 10 and entering puberty. She's got a few whiteheads appearing on her forehead and is currently refusing to leave the house after discovering a spot on her cheek. Please can I have recommendations for suitable skin care? She doesn't use anything currently.

Bless her, it’s so tricky and at that age, everyone’s developing at different speeds.

The most important thing is to keep it simple & to not use skincare ingredients that can harm skin. There is an interesting book on teen skin care by Caroline Hirons that might be worth a ready (for you or for her).

I would start with a simple cleansing with a gentle cleanser, and a moisturiser - morning and evening. You can do a lot of damage to your skin barrier through well intentioned use of products.

If she continues to struggle, and budget permits, you could see a dermatologist or similar skin clinic to take their guidance and receive regular treatment responsibly.

I recommend Acnecide/Purifide - available from Boots or Superdrug, foaming face wash and moisturiser and also a spot-on cream. It does have benzoyl peroxide in, which I myself have found is the only thing effective against mild acne, which appears to be hereditary in our family - my DD uses it too, my main bit of advice would be to not squeeze and also use as few products as you can.

we used this (for sensitive skin) for pre teen skin cleansing. Salicylic acid exfoliates the pores. Acnecide is also good, the benzoyl peroxide kills the acne bacteria.

One of mine ended up on prescription antibiotics as these treatments weren’t enough for full blown acne. But they were a good starting point to try.

The dermatologist we saw recommended this as a gentle salicylic cleanser, along with the antibiotics.

Don’t go faffing about with stuff you can buy in Boots which will probably make it worse. Some people need medicated topical solutions or long term antibiotics.
