Has anyone else realised they own far too many shoes?

I have been having a big sort out of my house and I have thirty pairs of shoes for charity! Shoes, sandals, trainers, boots, heels, court shoes I used to wear to work years ago. It’s ridiculous!

I am left with one pair of black boots, two pairs of flat sandals, sliders, a pair of Toms and a pair of white Vans. I also have two Mary Jane style flat shoes in red and leopard print which I like but kill my feet so they might go too.

I am going to try to manage with fewer shoes, bags and clothes going forward!

I have one pair of each.... knee high boots, ankle boots, brogues, flipflops, sandals, canvas shoes, mary jane style, high heels, trainers and Toms.

I did have a lot more but when I moved, a year ago, I have away loads....I was on a roll getting rid of stuff!
The older I get the less I want to look after and 'house' stuff.

If i include all my boots, trainers and flip flops I have about 110 pairs of footwear! And that's after having a couple of purges of my heels since retirement 5 years ago 😱😂

TheOGCCL · 09/08/2026 18:22

I try to be conservative but still have 4 pairs of sandals, six pairs of boots and five pairs of trainers. Plus one pair of shiny low heeled gold shoes for out out and a pair of ballerina flats for not sure what but they came in useful for a funeral recently. And a couple of pairs of flipflops/sliders but I don't count those.

I like to have a bit of choice but not go over the top and all my shoes need to be comfortable because otherwise I know I will never choose them.

I think it's easy to lose track of what you have and end up not wearing things for years and at that point I'm not going back as there will have been a reason they fell out of favour and trends will have moved on.

HelenHywater · 09/08/2026 18:25

I did the same with my shoes this morning - I had so many , some of which were 20 years old! Just holding onto them for no reason. I was quite ruthless. I feel much better.

mynameiscalypso · 09/08/2026 18:25

Too many but also not enough

We could be shoe twins 😂 im probably close to 130 !! If I include slippers and wellies 😱😱

mothanxiety · 09/08/2026 18:28

I did a clearout a few weeks ago. Between clothing and footwear, I got rid of eight bags. Nobody needs four pairs of very similar espadrilles...

Summerinthecity26 · 09/08/2026 18:31

I don’t feel as bad now if other people have a lot more! Not sure how anyone stores them all though.

I have my great grandmothers Victorian travelling trunk and a specially built space in my wardrobe for them . I also rotate seasonally.

99victoria · 09/08/2026 18:41

I have a 4 bedroom house and my children have left home so I have turned one of the bedrooms into my dressing room (I have a lot of clothes too 😂)

Silverbirchleaf · 09/08/2026 19:01

Reckon I have about thirty five pairs of shoes, sandals etc. They seem to have accumulated over recent years, but I do like to vary what I wear, depending on my outfit. I can gain and lose weight but my shoes still fit!

FoxRedPuppy · 09/08/2026 19:09

I recently counted (for another thread) and I have about 10 pairs in total. 2 are walking boots and that includes flip flops and wellies 😂.

I don’t think I’m particularly stylish though, but not a complete frump.

I don’t go out much, wear trainers or doc martens for work, and spend most weekends walking/camping.

My walking boots are the most expensive ones 😂

DeeNiall · 09/08/2026 19:18

I have no idea how many I have. I keep finding ones I don't recall buying.

WorthyOpalZebra · 09/08/2026 19:21

I have too many shoes but in my defence, I've got odd feet which are narrow and an old ankle injury, so when I find something that fits and feels comfortable I will buy one in every colour. There is also the poverty mindset - after many years of only having a single pair of shoes that got worn until they fell apart because that was all I could afford, I'm now in the privileged position of having a disposable income so I'm stocking up in case hard times return. I have 3 pairs of the same sandal but in navy, silver and red, and the brogues seem to have doubled when I wasn't looking. The winter boots are currently boxed up in my wardrobe while the rack by the front door is overrun with my summer collection. And we won't talk about my bag collection.

tinytemper66 · 09/08/2026 19:37

Sorry? I don’t understand…🤣

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 09/08/2026 20:17

Currently 56 pairs, oldest were purchased in 1979, newest 3 weeks ago. I like a real variety of styles, colours and textures. I did have a cull recently, but this was based on comfort and safety, so if the trial hallway walk was uncomfortable or wobbly, in the charity shop bag to their next home. Some live on a shoe rack and the rest in 4 large plastic crates, where they are themed. I look after my shoes and think they make an outfit. I do target shoes, try them on and wait till sales, so often get shoes on my list at a bargain price.

PDAalltheway · 09/08/2026 20:47

I have 1 pair of boots and 1 pair of sliders. I could do with some others really.

Namechange26andabit · 09/08/2026 21:01

I’ve got two under bed boxes, which have not been touched in at least three years. Also got lots of heels and wedges, not high, but not flat, only worn flats or trainers since April 2025 when I damaged my ankle ligaments. I need a cull, but some have only been worn once, so it’s hard.

Americanodrinker · 09/08/2026 21:07

I don’t know how many pairs of shoes I have but I know it’s too many. I might count them tomorrow. I am trying to sell some as I know I won’t/cant wear them anymore but they are beautiful shoes so it’s hard…….

The ‘worn once’ should be the ones you sell on vinted, as they obviously not adding to your wardrobe.

2026letsgo · 10/08/2026 07:12

Shoes are the hardest thing to cull I find. Plus you can only cull in season, invariably the summer shoes I threw out just last year, are the ones that would have matched this years new dress.

As I approach my 60’s though I can at last jettison my smart work shoes and more unreasonable heels.

Yes same here, over 100 pairs of footwear in all guises.

IwanttoWFH · 10/08/2026 07:22

I had a purge and was ruthless. I realised I’d held onto very uncomfortable shoes because they were beautiful. I worked out I’d worn this particular pair of shoes once, 13 years ago!

I listed loads on Vinted and they all sold.

I don’t really wear heels anymore (apart from at work). I kept a few pairs that are comfy for “just in case”. I do probably have too many pairs of sandals and trainers but I’m not allowing myself to buy anymore!

TofuTuesday · 10/08/2026 07:22

I feel like I have.
two pairs trainers
two pairs flip flops
one pair flat sandals
one pair wedge sandals
one pair casual shoes
one pair DMs
two pairs ankle boots
one pair evening heels
one pair smart sandals
one pair cowboy boots
One pair canvas shoes

so 12 or 14 with the flip flops

paulheatonscoat · 10/08/2026 07:27

I have loads but none of them are from years ago and they all get worn so I don’t consider that to be too many. Shoes are life.
