My first Gay wedding invitation.what on earth do i wear?!

its my nieces big day,she has no interest in clothes or fashion so i dont want to go overdressed! but then i havent met any of her friends who could be quite quirky and OTT!!

yikes please just wear what you would usually wear to a wedding. 'camping it up' would be very presumptuous and I would have hated it at my wedding.

Not trying to be presumptuous but think my normal posh frock/hat outfit is so formal

Think you need to take your cues from the venue/s and wear what you would wear to any wedding. Ignore the gay bit!

So if posh hotel, hat required.

If registry office then quiet meal, ditch hat.

If your niece knows what sort of style you wear for a wedding, and then you change it dramatically/go all casual for hers, she may be a bit upset thinking that you haven't made an effort, that you don't see it as a proper wedding or something.

At our wedding we had rather a lot of bikers who were camping and much of the day was taking place outdoors (ceremony, bbq, bands etc)so we decided to tell everyone to wear what they wanted to and felt comfy in. I didn't want anyone to feel out of place. I could have predicted who would take us at our word and who would drag out the Laura Ashley and the silly hats.... people are very stuck on what one 'ought' to wear at a wedding! My sister, wearing a hat the size of a cartwheel, had the nerve to whisper to me about ne of the guest's pink mohican.
