Best dye for grey hair

My hairdresser has been out of action, and naturally I was hoping she’d return just for me before my holiday on Friday to deal with my increasingly impressive grey halo/roots. 😂
It’s been FOUR MONTHS since my last appointment, so there’s quite a bit of landscaping required at this point.
I need to grab a box off the shelf this week… BUT I have a very real fear of turning bright orange — a look I accidentally pioneered when I attempted DIY hairdressing about 20 years ago. 🍊😂
I also haven’t got time to find a new salon and endure the obligatory 48-hour patch test before Friday, so…

What are the best box dyes these days?
Ideally I’d like a semi-permanent because I’m really looking for a temporary disguise rather than fully committing to a colour that can’t ever remove!! 😂

L’Oréal Casting is pretty good and loads of colours. There will be numbers and tones on top of the box which tell you if it’s ash (cool) or warmer like gold or mahogany.

What colour are you? If mid/dark brown, don’t go darker than a 6 and look for one that says ash rather than golden or mahogany. A 5 will be VERY dark and 4 nearly black, whatever the picture looks like.

If blonde, you want a 7 or 8 or above and likewise look for cool tones.

I use Josh Wood. Expensive but I really like it.

I use Casting by L'Oréal.
It leaves hair shiny and soft but choose a lighter colour than you actually want.
I use light brown on my medium brown hair as if I use medium it's way too dark.
It's never gone orange at all but choose an ashy or neutral brown not golden.
It tells you at the top of the box.

Clairol nice and easy Tone &Gloss . My hair has dark roots with grey ! Ashy highlights ( also with some grey!) I know I sound fab !!
This stuff covers my grey regrowth in between appointments . They go a nice shade and look like more highlights . Semi permanent too so eventually fades and washes out . No orange / brassy tones with it either .
