Pixie haircut for over 50s?

I am feeling the need for a change and am considering a micro pixie cut.

I'm 52, 5'3" about a size 18, rarely wear makeup. I also look my age- puffy eyes, wrinkles etc. I'm not vain so objectively I would say I was quite plain,not ugly just very ordinary looking,oval face nice eye colour no stand out features.

Do these cuts only look good on models? I had really short har about 25 years ago- I liked it but my now DH didn't really. I'll post a couple of pictures of the style I like that i found on pinterest. . Have been asking AI and quite like the mock up it did but think I need a real life opinion. I could post the AI image as well but don't really want to out myself!

I’m 65, very grey, have a short pixie cut which is both convenient and flattering. I use a barber rather than a women’s hairdresser - they do a better job with very short hair, in my experience, and cost less.

I’d be wary, having had a pixie cut in my 30s but shoulder length or longer for the last 25 years or so and no plans to change.

Mine is wavy so might be a bit different but the drawbacks of the pixie cut were that I had to wash and style it every day with a dryer, which as I am the sort of person who goes camping or other basic travelling quite a bit meant shit hair while I was away. Shoulder length I can just wash and let dry naturally no styling required. If the short hair got wet it ruined the style, same problem with outdoorsy lifestyle and not a problem with shoulder length. Cold in winter (I don’t like scarves). Needed cutting every 5 weeks on the dot. With shoulder length it’s any time between 10 and 14 weeks. The cut is far quicker, in and out of the hairdresser in half an hour with shoulder length hair and no annoying tiny bits of hair down the back of my neck, I always had to go home and change with short hair, never do now. The final thing was that I really did have to up my game with make-up, which really isn’t me, I just like a tiny bit of brows done and mascara.

I hardly wear make up- would be OK to make sure brows were done etc but wouldn't want to have to do a full face every day. What I would like is a cut that I could wash, towel dry and maybe a bit of wax /gel to define

I don't think pixie cuts are flattering on most middle aged women, to me they look like like a practical haircut rather than a nice haircut, which is fine if that's what you want.

I don't wear any makeup and think my hair looks good. I can wash it every day, towel dry it and either leave it as it is or put wax on it to make it more interesting.

I actually think most women, particularly older ones, look better with short hair. Just about every celebrity that has had short hair I thought looked much better with short hair than longer

I don't agree. I think a well cut short style looks much neater and nicer than longer hair.

I have wavy hair and a pixie cut. I do nothing, literally nothing, to it other than wash and condition it. At the absolute most I run my fingers through it. I have had short hair for years, but even when it was only chin length it required faffing around with and it never looked as I wanted it to. Having it shorter is the most freeing thing in the world. I also get it cut every 8 weeks - and I wear no make up at all. It takes less than half an hour to have it washed and cut and I never have annoying bits of hair down the back of my neck.

I think pixie cuts look amazing on some people. They just have the right face and features for it. I do not have the face / features for a pixie I know this already so I will not have one.
I think you have to have a certain something about you to pull it off so it doesn’t look like a practical frumpy hairstyle, I don’t really know how to explain it except I know that I don’t have it !

I’d say you need great bone structure for this type of cut and not a round face (DD has a round face and very short hair doesn’t suit her, she needs some framing).
i haven’t had proper short hair since my mid-20s and now mid-50s. I’ve had a version of a bob for 30 years 😂, it’s very forgiving.

I’m 50, got a cut pretty similar to Naga Manchettys and I love it. I’ve always worn my hair short, and actually don’t care about people who don’t like it as there are plenty of people with long hair who I think don’t suit it but at the end of the day if they like their hair then that’s all that matters.

It’s too long a pixie if you look like her.

I am 56 and have very similar hair type to the OP- even colour wise- and have had short pixie most of the time since I was a teenager. Attempts to have longer hair are hopeless especially with such fine hair, and age me massively. So I say go for it!

It's hard to say as it very much depends on your general style and the colour of your hair.

It can look like you've given up on life and just have a practical haircut.

Or it can look stylish and bold.

Or it can make you look masculine if you don't have more delicate features (this is what my issue is)

Well I don't have delicate features or great bone structure but I think my hair style suits me. Maybe it makes me look masculine but I don't care if it does and DH likes it too.

I think using wax or gel makes it much more interesting that just long hair which, let's face it, is usually pretty boring and doesn't suit every woman anyway

I’ve has short hair for about 45 years of my life (I’m 48). Pixie cuts, buzz cuts and everything in between. The only time recently I let my hair grow a bit longer was when I started putting on weight in early forties. I’ve never been overweight but I’m petite and every extra gram seems to end up on my face. I looked like full moon with short hair and round face.

I got back to my old weight three years ago and I’ve also got straight back to a very short pixie. My face is small, I have sharp features, no jowls so far and a bit of a sigma jawline (thanks to teeth clenching 😅) I can’t imagine myself with long hair to be honest. I think it’s an unforgiving haircut but it’s much easier to look stylist and put together with short hair that require minimal morning maintenance.

I think it depends, I know when I was larger, I couldn’t pull it off, I looked like I’d a pin head and v large body, longer hair was much more flattering, if I’m honest I e a pretty face, but when I was fat I had fat face, round, cheekbones buried, double chins, puffy eyes, and I needed hair to balance it,

one way I’d say is wash your hair, scrape it back into a low bun and you will pretty much see what you will look like with a short pixie, if you like it go for it, if not do something with a little more length and volume.

You really need to be having this conversation with a hairdresser you trust, while sitting in front of the mirror in a hair salon.

A lot of people seem to be almost afraid of short hair, and there was a feature about this in the Times recently. Since then I have been people watching and have noticed lots of women of a certain age looking great with a variety of short hair styles.

My hair is short, it's dead easy to look after, I don't have to have it cut every month and looks good. If I grew it long it would need colouring, or else I would look like a witch, and would almost certainly be tied back or pinned up to look nice, as it's so fine.
