they can be done at home but deopends on the shade of your natural hair and what tone your looking for at the end

I have done my own quite a few times and they looked fine.

My hair is naturally light blonde so had to keep a really close eye on my hair as it lightened up very fast.

It does leave it in crap condition though as the chemicals are I think harsher than at a salon.

I used to do my own when I was a student, but I have long hair and pulling it through the cap with that hook thing was a nightmare! Also felt like straw afterwards. This was 15 years ago though, so the kits might be better now.

The L'Oreal ones are all right, but avoid Garnier like the plague. I posted on here a while ago after trying to lighten my already quite blonde hair. I was almost crying. The highlights went bright orange - I'm not exaggerating.

I had to dye again over the top and now my hair is really dry and straggly.

I was proud of my thrifty ways in buying a pack of £2.95 highlights and then getting a £12 haircut, but after just catching sight of myself in a shop mirror, I think you usually get what you pay for.

Don't do it!!! Go and ask at your local salon if they have a night wher you can go and have it done as a model for their trainee. That should be cheap and there should still be a professional there to watch them...

TheBlonde · 26/06/2008 15:24

Dropdeadfred- have you had a bad experience then?

Niceychops · 26/06/2008 15:44

Don't do it. I turned my hair white. God it was awful.

TheBlonde · 26/06/2008 15:45

I just can't face hours in the hairdressers anymore
