Help me find a simple summer dress please

I'm looking for help in finding a simple (proving to be anything but!) summer dress. This board is great for this kind of thing. Budget £50. Will stretch that for the perfect dress.

I'm a size 12-14, narrow shouldered, petite height 50 something year old woman with DD boobs. I'm looking for something more on the casual side, not flouncy, not random all over type patterns. Short length though not mini. I don't suit fussy or frilly or boho. Not long sleeved but sleeveless, capped sleeves, short sleeves etc all fine. Not halter neck or strapless. The kind of thing that can be dressed up if wanted. I hate skater style dresses and shifts can be tricky as I'm short-waisted and pear shaped. Petite fit often my best option. I suit jewel colours, black, white, and navy. This is the best I've found so far after scouring many websites: https://www.roman.co.uk/petite-cherry-tie-waist-dress-14759338?gadsource=1&gadcampaignid=17418966397&gbraid=0AAAAACsLkkKbBUj7YFZVsm9ALcCKBmDgT&gclid=Cj0KCQjw4JbTBhCoARIsALWUaBuduI2c3iPYbw6Inyw58qzZIqeXolInSXlLgBx5GIpyEs4uLSEbcaAkoGEALwwcB

Thank you in advance.

PS - nothing on the "Need a summer dress bored of wearing shorts thread" is my kind of thing

This is my favourite summer dress this year. Dress up or down and very comfortable.

Thank you for the suggestion. That style doesn't suit me as it's veering towards boho. I suit more tailored shapes, if that makes sense?

Possibly though I think that would better suit someone taller! I tried on some similar stuff in And Other Stories a few weeks ago. I decided that was all a bit tent like and not as flattering as I'd hoped. I've lost a stone and a half this year and have more to lose to properly feel like myself again.

The Boden Saoirse dress on another thread is a good shape for me - a gathered waist can look really frumpy on me if too full and I'm afraid the M&Co dress strays into that territory.

Edited

I saw that earlier, I like the stripey one. Probably too short for me though, but a possibility. Thank you.

My mum is 5'2 and has one in a different print and it hits her about knee length

The New Look one is pretty but has long sleeves.

Currently in the middle of a trying on session of holiday clothes...

I've ordered the Boden one in black 2 sizes as I'm between them so will see which fits best. Still looking for something shorter though.

Is this too full-skirted?

Another Boden one in several jewel colours/black/navy. Presume it's the Saoirse one you ordered?

Thanks @EleanorMc67 - I've scoured Boden! I've been stalking a dress that's too expensive currently. The first one I'm not keen on the contrast trim, plus I think the skirt's too full. The second one looks too much like a work dress, but that may be down to the styling in the photos.

I think the second one is worth a try? Imagine it in green/black/navy with chunky tan flatform sandals & a leather & raffia bag?? There are also patterned versions, which I presumed you wouldn't like - but you did post a ditsy floral print, so maybe look at those too?

Would this sort of shape work? All French Connection in 12 or 14 (in the past I've found them slightly smaller-fitting, not sure these days though). Not petite, but will be slightly longer than mini as a result. There are some florals too, though haven't posted pics.

George at ASDA..honestly so many styles just like you asked for.. is it for an occasion? What other summer dresses do you have? Buy same in different colours if you like them

EleanorMc67 · 26/07/2026 16:51

I know there are both super-fans & super-detractors of Seasalt on MN. Their ethics are commendable though, & they do some plain, classic linen dresses that would be easily dressed up with edgier accessories. This one doesn't come in petite, unfortunately - but could be taken up easily if you want it a bit shorter?

I have this dress. It's viscose with linen, and it doesn't crease badly

It's a surprisingly flattering shape for bigger boobs. It's also a nicer colour in real life.

I actually think the model is wearing a size too big and you should downsize (as I have). I'm 5'5" and it's knee length on me.

I did just have a look at George at Asda out of curiosity, as a PP had suggested it. There are a few dresses that could be ok - but in all honesty most of them do look as if they cost the price of a ready meal?

I don't have an Asda near me, so perhaps that's not the case in reality - but I'd rather look on eBay/Vinted for brands that I know & like.

Not sure if these are way off the mark...
