What’s the difference between your waist and hip measurements?

TheChosenTwo · Yesterday 09:25

Mine is 8 inches.
Makes buying bottoms a pain because if it’s going to fit at the waist I need a smaller size than if it’s something to be designed to sit around the hips. Also if it’s going to sit around the waist and its trousers I need them to be a longer length because I’m quite tall.
Is this a regular difference between hips and waist? I was always quite self conscious about my hips being much larger, I mean objectively I know they’re not massive but it’s just annoying as it means I pretty much need to try things on in store or order the same item in about 4 different size/length options and then return what doesn’t fit. And I like wearing trousers and skirts along with dresses.
Just wondering if anyone else wants to vent to me about this irritating issue 😭😂

Five feet one inch

Waist 29

Hips 40

When I was younger my waist was 23 and my hips 36.5.

36-24-36 at 5’10 and 9 and a half stone, I find it hard to get things that fit well, I can be a size 8,10 or 12 depending on the shop. Cant find jeans that fit well or look good. Also I have really bad cellulite for some reason which is annoying.
my measurements are even but I look bottom heavy due to thighs.

ImPamDoove · Yesterday 20:53

I hate absolutely no idea so I measured. Waist 27, hips 36. 5’9.

I always think of myself as having no waist so I’m surprised it’s relatively proportionate.

ItsStillWork · Yesterday 20:54

Waist 32”
hips 39”

5 ft. 8

wear a 12 mainly, some 10s and one or two 14s

Btowngirl · Yesterday 20:56

10 inches at the moment, I’ve got pretty big hips and a small waist. Big strong legs as well, I absolutely detest Jean shopping and always have. I find the M&S barrel jeans a really good fit for my physique though if that’s any help.

Answering your title, my waist to hip ratio is 0.76, or in real world terms, 29" and 38", at 5ft 8". Sadly (not really) not quite reaching the old 'ideal' of ten inches difference 😆

I'm confused as to why this is a problem for you regarding clothing, though? Of course you need a different size for your waist vs your hips! If you're a healthy weight, then ideally your waist to hip ratio will be under 0.8, I believe.

And if you're wearing trousers higher up on your body, of course they need to be longer! But they would be cut quite differently, too. Trousers designed to sit on the waist would look silly bagging down at the hips with a deep crotch, and trousers cut to sit at the hips wouldn't have enough crotch depth to sit up around your waist!

I’ve never heard of 10 inches being the ideal.

Back in the 1970s when Miss World was televised, the contestants’ “vital statistics” were usually 36,24,36 so I’d assume 12” was considered the ideal (then, at least). Certainly I’d say that clothes used to be designed with a bigger gap between waist and hips than they are now.

I find it much harder these days to find clothes that fit both my waist and hips. If it fits my hips, it gapes at the waist.

I have an 8 inch difference (just checked).
I just have everything tailored. It makes such a difference to how clothes look.

About 15 inches - makes buying trousers really hard! My best bet is palazzo style so I buy for my waist measurement and just fill out more of the swing than they designed for. This is why I ended up learning to sew.

Grandmashorty · Yesterday 22:35

W25.5, H32.5 so 7 inches difference. Height 5 ft 1

There are a lot of tall and slim people on this thread! I am embarrassed to post my measurements.

I have the opposite problem OP, since menopause my mid-section has increased hugely and I struggle to get trousers that fit round my waist that then aren’t too baggy around my bum. And that’s even with an elasticated waist.

I sm aware that it’s unhealthy and it’s odd for me as in my 20s, early 30s I had the opposite problem with a very small waist.

groguismychild · Yesterday 23:28

11 inches. I have a very small waist, wide hips and a short torso but wide shoulders also so I guess you could call it hourglass but it's impossible to find clothes that fit, jeans are either too tight on the hips or gap when at the back, petite clothes fit my torso but then tight on my shoulders.

No need for embarrassment- it was the difference between waist and hips I was looking for!
Seems mine is fairly standard and yet some with similar sized differences are fine to buy trousers and yet others are getting everything tailored.
i suppose we are all such different shapes and proportions. I have quite a flat bum so nothing to fill out trousers 🥴 or really balance out the hips. I also have no boobs to speak of.
Anyway thanks everyone for sharing your responses, it’s been an interesting read if nothing else!

I’m like this, I’m short with curves and also have widish strong shoulders which balance out my hips. Petite is ok on me though because I’m so short so there’s another material to fit me.

Petite clothing is ok if it's a sleeveless maxi/midi dress for example where the length doesn't matter too much, and I don't have to worry about it fitting my shoulders so much, I'm not tall but have long legs compared to my top half.
Interestingly, I find clothes when on holiday say in Spain or Italy fit better, perhaps they cater to different body shapes depending on where you are. I feel UK shops cater for more apple shape or rectangle body types.

Don’t feel embarrassed. My waist and hips are 36 and 42 inches, so the difference is 6 inches and I’m only 5’3 tall!
