Is it possible to grow my hair longer now I’m 40? It keeps breaking.

I’ve always had long hair. I would love to grow my hair even longer than what it is. I have waist long hair and want it longer than this. It seems to break at the length it is now and never grow beyond the current length. Is there a method to it or is it my hair aging out and thats it for my hair now?!

a. Make sure you're covering all nutritional bases.
b. Use a 'Wet Brush" (brand name) rather than a comb or regular hairbrush. It prevents breakage and tugging-induced hair loss which can make a real difference to hair thickness and length.

Haven't noticed a change in mine and I'm over 40 now, never had it quite waist length though. Have you dyed it, because people say that weakens it?

Apileofballyhoo · 08/07/2026 15:52

Have you had it longer before without issue?

Tbh, I think most people of any age would struggle with hair longer than waist length because by the time it's that long its going to be years old and a bit fragile.

@Apileofballyhoo yes I’ve had it knee length. Don’t want it that long now but would like it a little longer than waist length. @StabiaGirl never heard of a wet brush Will look it up thanks. I take daily vitamins.

I do dye it because I’m pretty grey these days!

Baby it ! Use silk bonnets and and when it's wet be super careful combing this is where it's at its most vulnerable!! I'm a stylist !
Also don't use oil on dry hair if U do always use on wet or damp hair this seals moisture in make sure all your hormones ok as well ! I'm 50 and for the last year have grown mine from super short bob to just part collar bone x

If you dye your hair then you've answered your own question about why it keeps breaking off beyond waist length. By the time your hair is at your waist it will be years old and even dying it once will damage the cuticle and make it more likely to break.

You could stop dying it to improve the health, but presumably it will take about 5 years to grow out!!

@Additup thanks. I’ve dyed it for over 20 years but only the last few years have been an issue. It’s in good condition, i wouldn’t keep it long if it wasn’t. Perhaps it’s 20 years of dying it though 😂

I used to dye my hair and it's much better since I stopped, about 12 years ago when I was 38.

I would sooner have a couple of grey hairs in otherwise fantastic healthy shiny swishy hair, than dye it and have awful hair that I can't grow!

I can't get it to waist length though, but it was well below bra strap length until I had to cut a few inches off due to some mild weight loss related hair loss.

It's growing back really thick again now though so should be able to get it back to the original length and thickness in about 18 months I think

Do you swim? Always wash straight away if so

Im 52, my hair is highlighted and trimmed every 6 weeks, I take biotin and collagen and it's grown from chin length to past my shoulders since April
