May potentially be very hot so don't want heavy or sweaty material..
I'm a size 10/12, 5ft 5. Would like v neck with butterfly sleeves or similar.
Any suggestions? I'm conscious of my arms. Also maxi dresses dont suit me... thank you in advance to anyone that takes the time to help 😍

Honestly, if time and money allow, I would aim to buy something there. The styles and quality are much better, it will be weather appropriate fabric and you won’t run the risk of being in the same dress as someone else. I’d go to a big El Corte Ingles or boutique.

Alternatively get something here in end of summer sales - silk maybe ( definitely not cheap nylon-y satin) or even a more formal design of pure cotton dress.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 05/07/2026 00:01

@Travelfairy Either buy cotton here (not Jersey t shirt) or a cotton linen. I’d never wait until I was abroad! Too
much stress and what about accessories?

I’ve picked these out from Boden - I honestly haven’t looked at fabrics, just style!

What? The styles and quality are really not better here. Furthermore we already have summer sales on and by September the Spanish shops are already full of winter stock. It’s not summer all year round here, even in the hottest parts.

These are available at John Lewis or via the stores.

Good point on timing as it may well be autumn styles in Spanish shops in September, but perhaps the OP will be on holiday before then ….but….I”m afraid that i still think that the quality of formal clothing, not to mention the variety, of ‘fiesta’ wear, is far superior in large cities in Spain.

I”m a similar height and weight to the OP with an hourglass figure and find the cut of Spanish clothing, especially dresses, suits me compared to eg Cos, Me and Em and other such brands often liked on here. Shoes and boots are better too.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 05/07/2026 09:15

@EvelynBeatrice If I was going I would stick to my British roots. Brands I can rely on and not go searching for fiesta wear that means nothing to me. I’m not Spanish and prefer to be me, not a Spanish version.

Love & roses (can find on next website) have some really beautiful summer dresses at the moment, affordable too!

Ah well, each to their own 😁 Who’d have thought such strength of feeling would be generated in Style & Beauty?!

Just in case of lurid imaginings, I do assure you that Spanish ‘fiesta’ ie party/ formal wear is not flamenco style, just very nicely cut dresses, trousers etc.

In the U.K. I’d be interested to know what brands / designers you’ve found to be great for 5”4/5 small framed women. I’ve sometimes found Phase eight (standard not petite) ok as per Hobbs, Boden, Mint Velvet etc but you run the risk of every other middle aged woman being in same. Reiss is often cut poorly for petite hourglass and I’ve found proper designers even worse for this - so big cut - and unless spending in excess of £800 or so you get the same synthetic fabrics and poor finish as on the high street

I wonder whether French Connection might be worth a look OP - bit more youthful vibe - or maybe Anthropologie. Happy hunting.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 05/07/2026 16:13

I posted decent enough dresses. There are loads. Honestly, who has time for shopping in Spain when you are going to a wedding. Why not say it’s trousers (which op does not want) and dresses - plus I don’t have a lurid imagination. I’m pragmatic and want my look sorted out before I go anywhere on a plane!

Brands - loads of them. You would be unlucky to find anyone in matchy matchy high street. Spending more - Zimmerman, Beulah, Rixo, Self portrait, Ganni and many Danish brands.

What’s your budget op?

PermanentTemporary · 05/07/2026 16:23

Anna Ruohonen theatre dress in lilac bamboo viscose, half price at €105. Depending on your colouring could be nice, her stuff is very wearable

Is it a British couple with most guests travelling or live there and most guests Spanish? I’ve been to two Spanish weddings, one deliberate one accidental (small boutique hotel, turned out we were the only non wedding guests and they invited us to the party!) both more evening dress than uk.

MsBubbles85 · 07/07/2026 11:37

Where in Spain? The weather will be very different if in the South or North. What type of wedding venue? Day or evening wedding?
