Ideas for what to wear on Scottish city break this weekend — it’ll be 19 and rainy.

My look is casual dresses / skirts / boots / sandals. Not really a jeans and trainers person.

I’m from the south and have been wearing almost beachwear for weeks.

Thanks.

Scotland in general, and Edinburgh specifically, can be a four seasons in one day kinda place. I always carry an umbrella, and sunglasses and generally a thin top layer/cardigan/wrap as well for example, as you just don’t know what you are going to get. And I am from here. Anything goes clothes-wise really, just take layers, and a bag to put them in, as you take them off then put them back on. Continuously.

Is it bare legs weather?

This, it has also been really humid here recently so layers and a waterproof is fine, Edinburgh is hilly so you don't need to be wrapped up.

I’ve been doing bare legs for a while, but as I say I’m from here. It’s pretty windy a lot of the time so feels cooler. I guess I am saying if you are used to the South of England, you might find Edinburgh a bit chilly. But it has been quite humid, and you’ll likely be doing a lot of walking too.

ps can I just say Edinburgh is blooming awesome, and I hope you have a fab time!

Is it bare legs weather?

I would say so if you are wearing shorts or dresses, although i am Scottish so maybe used to the weather.

LarkspurBlues · 02/07/2026 14:40

Right so maybe a tshirt dress type thing with removable leggings and trainers; and jumper in bag.

I'm going to meet my partner’s family and so don’t want to look weird. Or too messy, or to neat, or too sexy, etc

Oh how exciting honestly just wear what you are comfortable in,

Merryhobnobs · 02/07/2026 14:57

I've had bare legs over the last few weeks (just North of Edinburgh). Even though it hasn't been so hot it has been very humid so full length jeans have felt like blankets. I have cropped loose jeans, skirts, midi dresses, cardigan with lightweight waterproof. Wouldn't bother with umbrella. Today it's so windy with a brolly you would fly away. I was in Edinburgh on Sunday and wore a midi dress, trainers, had a cardigan on and a waterproof in my bag.

Lomonald · 02/07/2026 14:59

I have been wearing light cropped trousers even in the rain because it has been so clammy,

MiddleAgedDread · 02/07/2026 15:01

it's a pretty casual city, people dress for the weather. Do you wear bare legs at home if it's 19degrees?? Bring comfy footwear and a waterproof jacket.

LarkspurBlues · 02/07/2026 15:01

Ok thanks guys. Good to know I can continue my extravagant sweating routine.

I think I’ve got a handle on it now. Thanks! It’s been a long time since I met anyone’s parents. This is my second time around.
