What to wear to a retirement do for a consultant at work?

I work at a hospital and have been invited to a retirement do for a consultant in my department.

I have heard through the grapevine that the dress code is “wedding”. I have one dress that’s suitable for a wedding and I am not dragging it out for this party. I don’t plan on staying for ages (I don’t know that many people there).

I have very fine hair, so it will be up in a ponytail.

I was thinking of wearing the attached dress and shoes. I will have my work bag with me as I’m going straight from work. Will this do?

The dress fits better on - the boob area looks really weird in the picture but it’s a lot better on!

Help, anyone! I have one day left to make changes if I need to, I’d need to go to M&S after work tomorrow

Looks absolutely fine. I have never heard of a dress code for a retirement do.

Neither have I until I started working in the medical field 🤣

I think you'll look fine. Nice dress and shoes.
Dress code rather bonkers. 😂

That should be fine.

CoI: Consultant who can't retire yet.

Looks fine to me it’s a works do retirement party…..no idea why wedding attire would be needed!

RomainingCalm · 01/07/2026 22:23

I think it looks absolutely fine. I went to a similar ‘do’ recently. Ladies were mostly in summer dresses, wedges/sandals. A few jumpsuits or floaty trousers/skirts with a top. Lots of polka dots. Men mostly in chinos with a pale blue shirt!

Maybe swap your work bag and/or add some jewellery if you want to make it feel a bit different.

The only thing I can think of is because he’s a consultant returning

On the grapevine? So not actually a dress code? Just that some people will choose to dress up a bit more than others. Dress is absolutely fine.

His secretary has told a colleague who’s told the rest of us

Looks lovely to me. Hope the do is more fun than you’re expecting! I know plenty of consultants, and this outfit would be more than enough for any of their parties!

I’m currently trying to weigh up whether I can wear my Birkenstocks 🤣

Crikey! dh is a consultant hoping to retire in a few years, he would be at his own do in shorts and t shirt! 😂

That dress and the sandals are lovely, go and have a couple of drinks and enjoy yourself.

Sounds like the secretary has a fancy dress she wants to wear and has taken it upon herself to invent a dress code! Which I would imagine most people will ignore.
