Man, hugely swollen feet - shoe ideas

Not strictly style and beauty but I'm desperate for any help!

My elderly dad has lymphodema in both legs which has, over time, lead to hugely swollen feet. He is under medical supervision for it but unlikely to improve his feet at all. Just adding this as not looking for medical advice here - it's as under control as it can get.

He is unable to find shoes that will fit him. Even the largest size of specialist shoes won't do up over the swollen feet. He doesn't leave the house very often but when he does, he has a pair of extra wide shoes that he has cut to get them on and then he holds them on with velcro straps.

We'd love to find a pair of shoes that he could get into comfortably and which he won't feel so conspicuous in. Resigned that we might end up having to get some made bespoke but even then can't find anywhere to start - most shoemakers are creating dress shoes and he wants something lightweight - more like a trainer.

Does anyone have any ideas or links they could share?

When Mum had very swollen feet I went to Cosyfeet. There’s at least some men’s options to look at - https://www.cosyfeet.com/mens-extra-wide-footwear/cosyfeet-trainers?gl=1u1uzp3upMQ.._gs*MQ..&gclid=Cj0KCQjwr4jSBhCSARIsAOX1E-Kn2WA6U4QBbXT8hMxcQJ5rTFtSiKNYGE8jel7V7Pn1s7uoyXOAq4saArJnEALw_wcB&gbraid=0AAAAAD_bxLpYnzATfnz-chzmxwOmtBP_n

I bought the women’s version of these for my mother who had swollen feet due to a medical condition, they don’t look awful and with the Velcro have an adjustable fit for width over the foot. Also easily returnable if they aren’t right https://amzn.eu/d/08u3qHXT

What about a Pullman space shoe- you are unlikely to get a leather shoe that fits for more than 1cm of swelling... However these often fit swollen feet. If not get a referral to your orthotics department for footwear to be made as you can't get any to fit off the high street....

Fitville sell shoes designed for very wide and/or swollen feet.

AlcoholicAntibiotic · 29/06/2026 20:48

Would any of these work? The company also seems to do strap extenders, so that might be something else to try.

Definitely CosyFeet and if you live near Street in Somerset you can go in and have them fitted at their store there. The staff are amazing. Or you can order online and try them on at home.

You can get bespoke shoes on the NHS if needed. If not, the same firms take private clients.

We use cosyfeet here in podiatry and for feet that are too big for cosyfeet we refer to hospital orthotics to fit our patients for bespoke footwear or off the shelf large footwear.
Your GP can refer him to hospital orthotics.

Thank you everyone who responded. Been having some other non footwear related family medical dramas so apologies for the delay in coming back but I will look into some of these with him :)

Agree with this suggestion - their own DB shoes are not just wide, but very deep - you can take out two sets of optional insoles to get much more room in all directions.
