Using salon grade dye to colour hair at home

Is there any difference between Salon grade dye and box dye? (I am guessing there is)

someone said to me today that the way to cover my stubborn grey hair is to use salon grade dye but I don’t know where to start. Does anyone do this? Or could you recommend a range/ brand to try and tell me what I need? (Eg colour plus developer?

box dye literally just washes out of my hair on one or two washes now, it’s so frustrating and expensive.

I don't dye my hair but I recently saw a reel by Nadine Baggott where she recommended going to a Sally Beauty for this as they have a massive range of dyes. She also said the sales assistants there are all trained colourists who can offer advice

@KiIIingMeDeftly thank you. I looked at Sally beauty yesterday online. There is a shop in my town that is a professional product wholesaler I think, I must admit I have never properly looked. I will try there!

ive used Esalon for about 10 years -it’s not quite as cheap as ones you buy on high street but I find it’s much less drying .

I did this for years, my hairdresser actually told me exactly what to get. I had two colours that I mixed, then the peroxide - the range was a Wella one beginning with C. Coleston Perfect or similar? I had a tint bowl to mix, and a brush to apply, and packs of surgical gloves, quite the pro.

That hairdresser went on maternity leave and my now hairdresser told me I had only about 5-10% grey, and why was I even bothering to dye, so I grew it out and never looked back!

@Judystilldreamsofhorsesi am definitely more than 5% Grey! I do use a bowl and brush to do my box dye but I’m hoping that the salon grade formula would hold better in my hair maybe?

I use wella illumina, it gives a nice gloss, but probably won’t give you enough coverage. Try wella Koleston, you can buy on amazon and it’s easy to make up with the developer.

You may need to presoften with peroxide, it was the only way I could get dye to stick (before I gave up).
It wasn’t too terrible when I was just doing my hairline but I couldn’t be arsed with more than that.

I bought the dye my hair dresser used on Amazon and do it myself when it needs it. It fades really fast.
