Would you tie a dress tie at the front or back?

If you had a dress that had tie-waist - rather than a belt, it's stitched at either side below the armpit at waist level - would you tie it at the front or the back?

Back - to pull the waist in to fit.

It depends on the dress, I would try both to see which looks better

NedsAtomicWheelieBin · 10/06/2026 17:14

I would normally tie it at the back but it does look better tied at the front, which is why I thought I would ask. It was on a mannequin when I bought it and it was tied at the front, I didn't notice that it wasn't a proper belt until I got it home.

Side??

BauhausOfEliott · 10/06/2026 17:15

Depends on the dress, but if it looks good both ways it’s usually optional.

Back

CeeceeBloomingdale · 10/06/2026 17:25

On the side very loosely or I'd remove the belt. I'm an apple shape, I don't want to draw attention to that area.

Front

MrsClattenburg · 10/06/2026 20:34

Back to cinch the waist in.

dudsville · 10/06/2026 20:44

I find tie style belts a little fussy and reminds me of dresses from my childhood, so for me I either try to wrap it around so there aren't any ties dangling, or tie it to the front side, if that makes sense?

Tie it at the back.

TutTutTutSigh · 10/06/2026 21:40

Back or side out of the way.

ElegantDresses · 10/06/2026 21:44

If it’s higher under the bust back, if it’s on the waist possibly front. I have a dress with long ties which I tie back and have to be very careful when I go to the loo not to let them dangle into it.

Back

Stripeysofa · 10/06/2026 22:37

Definitely front. Back is a bit frumpy!

HEC2746 · 10/06/2026 22:40

Depends on your body shape. I always tie at the front as that gives me more of a waist. Tying it at the back just leaves me looking about four months pregnant - exactly the level where people frown at you all night because they can’t decide if you are or aren’t.

Denim4ever · 10/06/2026 22:47

Back, but once or twice Ive just removed them altogether. I always take the drawstrings off trousers
