Straighteners for curling hair

I have a short bob now that I’d occasionally like to put a wave into. I’ve tried the tong-thing with a wave barrel and I look ridiculous. I like it when my friend uses a straightener to
put a curl in and like it even more the day after.

problem is, I have no straighteners and I have no idea how to do it.

Are there some straighteners easier to handle than others? Thin plates, thick plates?!

Also, I think I need to invest in a good heat protector as I’m blow drying my hair more often now.

Thinner plates are better. Remmington do a cheap enough straightener that’s really good for curls called shine therapy!
