What kind of hat should I get for day to day

My rosacea has had enough and I need to keep the sun off my face but hats feel socially transgressive unless you're on a beach. What is good and not weird looking?

I've got a big floppy straw hat, the brim is great for keeping the sun off my face and neck while I'm walking the dogs. It's this one:

Otherwise for something smarter, look at Holland Cooper. They're a bit more formal and striking.

socially transgressive? Not in my world. I nearly expired from envy at sight of a young man in a ridiculously modish pillbox, queuing at the bakers a couple of weeks ago.

Get a couple of good ones - caps, or a trilby if you must, in straw or linen, and wear them like you mean it. Eg:

I love them don't get me wrong it's more that strangers make fun of you and even at my ripe old age this troubles me

I use cheap and cheerful light bucket hats, foldable and packable into my pocket/bag. Nothing special, but they do the job without that "look at me" look!

I do however, attach false little flowers to the side, like daisies, and a band of coloured ribbon. I've been asked so many times where I bought mine ha ha. I use super glue as I can't sew for toffee. Works great.

Clearly your expression is too … benign. 😄 I haven’t had a stranger make fun of my clothes in more than half a century!

You’ll need to practise a more imperious demeanour in your mirror.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 28/05/2026 17:08

Fedoras, you need one in straw or a light colour for summer days, a felt for cooler but still sunny ones.

fantam · 28/05/2026 17:26

These are examples of mine. As I said, cheap and cheerful, with my fabric daisies pinned to the side. I have two more, one dark camel and one navy, all suitably adorned according to the colour. I don't like straw hats but that's just me. I have a wide brimmed Aussie style hat (you know the ones) without the corks ha ha for holidays abroad. I wouldn't wear it here, but I don't need to. It's packable aswell.

You beat me to it!🤠

Agree, a nice Panama.
I love mine. Lightweight, stylish and sooo effective in the sun.🌞

I wear an army/military cap day to day. Similar to a baseball cap but flat on top.
I too have a demeanor that does not invite comment, but I'd just laugh if anyone did say anything. Earphones are also a useful option for not hearing nonsense

You're right about this

I saw three women wearing lovely straw visor type things today. I bought one a couple of weeks ago but forgot about it til I saw them. This type of thing https://www.laurageller.com/products/sun-visor-hat

Sun Visor Hat

Wearing this lightweight straw sun visor makes it easy to stay protected while gardening, relaxing by the beach, or staying outside!

I have one of these. It rolls up into a cylinder. Have to say I found it uncomfortable to wear, the velcro was too far apart so I had to stick some more on to make it fit, and it just didn't stay on right. I have a little head, the rest of me not so little! But I have to say it looks very nice on. When it fits properly!

BigBrownBoogyingBear · 28/05/2026 20:13

I wear an army style cap from Accessorize circa 2006 😬 It's made from pretty khaki fabric and I love it! No one has ever commented on it!

ExOptimist · 28/05/2026 20:19

A couple of years ago at the age of 60 I bought a Panama hat. I wish I'd bought one years ago, it's great for gardening and the beach but also looks good worn with all types of clothes, I think they have a certain style. Mine is cream cotton with a black band, bought from Sainsbury's!

Thindog · 28/05/2026 20:20

I wear a Tilley hat, worth the investment, classic hiking hat.

I like that it's adjustable, my crown is an odd shape so I find most hats are too tall and feel weird.

mdinbc · 28/05/2026 21:20

I really think it depends on your lifestyle. If you go to work in an office, or are you retired or work from and dress very casually.

Give us a bit more detail. I have quite a few hats, but more for drizzly days or warmth. I also have a raffia hat with the brim narrow in the back and wider in the front that is useful for sunny days. All are casual, no fancy hats for me!

Agree with the high crown on some hats. I was looking earlier at a promo for the Seville Fiesta and boy do I want one of the equestrian hats, they are just gorgeous, the shape is great. Although I'm not a great fan of straw I think I'll get this one to try out, it's not expensive and is very close to what I saw, it's the flat brim I like.

I have two raffia visors, I wear them daily. I have an enormous sun hat as well, but that makes me feel really on show so I don't wear it.
