French Riviera fashion - HELP

I’m off to Nice in the summer. I’m aiming to make a lot of my clothes to take away to try and reduce my consumption of fast fashion. I have made some shorts, and a couple of skirts.

My next aim is to make the screenshotted dress pattern in a couple of fabrics - a linen look and the polka dots.

Can someone point me somewhere for some more inspiration of what I should be looking to make?

Should mention - im size 16/18/20. Very frumpy usually. Trying to get better at dressing myself but I don’t. I don’t tend to get my arms out but im challenging myself to as I don’t want to hide behind clothes anymore.

And you’re a pretty experienced and very good dress maker?

awfulapril · 25/05/2026 18:06

Christ, neither of those two dresses

Newmeagain · 25/05/2026 18:07

Hmm - I am not loving that polka dot pattern. I think that design would look better in something a little bit more muted and sophisticated.

Not too bad! The items I’ve made so far are wearable, I don’t want them to look absolutely perfect, it’s more about reducing how much I buy and having a productive hobby. I’m getting better with each item I make!

I’m not a fan of the design of the fabric, but the pattern is perfect for me - light and floaty and hides my stomach

Sorry, that was rude. I don't like the colours of those dresses and can't see past them.

I think polka dots are very in at the moment though. I would also love it in a stand out colour like red, but don’t want to just make the same thing again and again 😂

Love polka dots. I think if you can carry off a dress like that then the fabric is lovely

I think the dress is a bit too shapeless though.

Ferreting · 25/05/2026 18:11

OP you don’t need to be experienced - half of all shop bought stuff is dreadfully stitched. The polka dots would look great on that dress although I think a navy linen would look fab too.

Have a look on Foldline and find some blogs that resonate - sewing is fabulous. Am sat here today in a dress I made - and yes don’t be scared of your arms!

I read today that this Max Mara dress is flying off the shelves. It's considered to look very similar to the one Julia Roberts wore to the polo in Pretty Woman.

If you have good sewing skills, you might be able to make something similar.

It’s the most satisfying thing in the world! I wore a skirt I made to work the other day and everyone loved it.

I also have a vest I made in ivory cotton jersey, and plan to make some nice flowy trousers in this fabric - I’ve made some already in navy and they’re lovely!

I’m not sure about the layering, but I do reckon I could do something similar with the vest pattern I have and just a basic skirt!

I think the dots you've got are too big

Floisme · 25/05/2026 18:17

For patterns (especially from independent companies), sewing advice, fabrics, blogs, inspiration etc etc, I've used:
The Foldline (already mentioned)
https://thefoldline.com/
Tilly and the Buttons (although you might be more advanced than this)
https://tillyandthebuttons.com/
Merchant and Mills

We love Tilly and the buttons in this house! What I love is that she has very inclusive models :)

Maybe this fabric would be better than black and white polka dots? I would really like a couple of dresses and maybe another skirt or something to take away.

What kind of things are you planning to do in Nice and where will you be staying?

Well dont make the same mistake we did and decide to do a nice walk to Villefranche sur Mer in the scorching heat, its uphill.

Theres a lovely bike route all the way to Antibes, which is very nice, the trains are frequent though. Long queues at Nice station though

We got the train to Menton for the lemons and the bus to Eze, hill top town, lovely

Just wear something that covers you from the sun and that is light. Sunhat and glasses!
