Fashion Gone Mad

I saw a woman on the tube this morning - incredibly stylish - with her handbag slung over her shoulder but completely open. I had read that leaving your handbag open was the new fashion but seriously, how utterly daft is this? Her phone and sunglasses were poking out the top. How crazy to travel on public transport like this?!

Are any mumsnetters doing this?

me sometimes with bags yes. Like my Fallabella.

I’ve had open handbags in the past, with maybe just a small strap across middle. It’s fine, you’re just mindful that it’s open. I’ve travelled on the tube for decades though so being aware of my belongings is very second nature.

I tell women their stuff is sticking oiutof their bags, id want somewone to tell me.

Tote bags, ok they're not meant to close. But undone like in this photo, I agree, fashion gone mad. Also, at my age people would probably start wondering if I was in the early stages of dementia

Oh that’ll explain why I kept seeing women’s Birkin bags with the clasps undone when we went away to Monaco for the weekend!! It looked very odd that’s why I noticed it. Don’t think I’ll be getting on that trend with my normal bags….!

Sounds like a pickpocket's dream.

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 24/05/2026 18:42

Why stop there? Why don't we all go round with our bras and shirts undone? And our shoes hanging off? Sounds like a plan? 😂

Fizbosshoes · 24/05/2026 18:50

I notice this with bags sometimes and im pretty surprised at how easy it would be to nick something or, it simply falls out.

DisrobeDatrobe · 24/05/2026 18:56

Some kind of statement, I'm sooo rich I don't care if my stuff falls out or gets nicked?

Bonkers.

Arran2024 · 24/05/2026 19:40

It's referred to as "pick pocket chic" apparently.

Maybe she has gadget insurance and wants the new iPhone. (Light hearted)

Either way though, I think it’s pretty stupid. You could maybe do it in Dubai, but London? Wow.

That actually rivals "heroin chic" for the worst fashion inspiration of all time.
