Kaftan. 1960's hippy vibe or ever trendy?

My sister, aged 70 just recently returned from a holiday nr Blackpool.
She told me of a chap staying at the hotel, who was stood outside hotel one morning smoking a cigarette and dressed in a kaftan.
I've always secretly wanted one (I'm 56). Yesterday I bought one it's gorgeous.
This is just a what do you think thread, what vibes do you think a kaftan gives off.
To me when I was younger it would have been associated with drugs and free sex. But I still want one to float around the garden supping a coffee.
Any thoughts?

Sorry op, generally I see them on overweight women trying to hide their bodies, or as beach wear. I’m your age and I don’t remotely associate them the same as you do, I’d have assumed someone much older, who lived through the sixties would.

I love kaftans and have a few, they are great for wafting about feeling stylish in:)

Onlythesaneones · 08/05/2026 06:54

Kaftans are my favourite thing about summer. I live in them (I am not overweight and will use belts to make them more dress like for outside the home!)
They remind me of Ibiza in the 90's, where I got my first Kaftan which I still have and wear! I just love how they feel, so swishy and airy on a hot day.

Gettingbysomehow · 08/05/2026 07:19

I'm not averse to a loose cotton kaftan ish dress.
Nothing better on those very hot days in summer.
They do vary though. Good ones are very useful to have. Come to think of it, mine might fall more into the beach dress /swimsuit "cover up" category. 🤔

I have a preloved Pucci one. I love it

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 08/05/2026 16:26

Sannabay · 13/05/2026 23:47

Nana Mouskouri vibe or Demos roussous vibes

suburberphobe · 14/05/2026 00:38

Go for it OP.

I personly loved the hippie time.

corblimeygvnr · 14/05/2026 03:47

It depends on the kaftan - pic required . I once saw some of Princess Margaret's kaftans and they were amazing. This one is perfection.

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 14/05/2026 08:25

The virtues of a kaftan in hot weather are that they are cool and comfortable, and prevent burning Also, mosquito protection. I wear them a lot on holiday and in the garden when it is truly warm. I have a short o e I even wear in the pool or the sea - again, to protect from burning because it is so easy to do

IgnoreIt · 14/05/2026 08:36

They say ‘back page of the Sunday supplements, next to the relaxed fit slacks and stairlifts’ to me, rather than Nana Mouskouri or 60s hippie.
