I’ve tried on so many clothes and I could cry.

Has anyone else been like this? I’m trying to lose weight and am size 16/18. I’ve just tried on loads of clothes and at the weekend too and everything looks hideous on me. I actually got really upset and don’t have enough clothes to wear at the moment.

I'm apple shaped with no hips or bum and skinny legs with large chest. Lumps around the middle which overhang. I look so weird in everything and don’t know what to buy. I caught sight of myself in a window today and I looked like an old frump.

Dresses with a waist are hideous on me. Too loose tops make me look even bigger.

Does anyone have any good advice before I’m forced to walk the streets naked! Thank you.

Surely that white one would be perfection on you. I could only dream of wearing that - its so lovely. Id look awful.

Notyouagaindear · 07/05/2026 16:42

The stuff in the shops likely is not helping - I went today and there was a sea of wide baggy tops that were way too short, unless you have a washboard abdomen.

raisinglittlepeople12 · 07/05/2026 16:48

I understand this feeling. I’m struggling to lose weight but have finally committed to a low carb, low sugar diet that is working for me. Not feeling good in clothes feels impossible. What you need now is stuff that fits, and then you can work on your fitness and diet so you can feel better in your skin.

@Baldermashthat red dress from Seasalt is just the kind of thing I need!

Definitely more flattering than that black, shapeless dress, and gently shaped too

houseofisms · 07/05/2026 17:14

Where do you try on clothes? I hate trying on clothes in fitting rooms as I feel uncomfortable anyway and the brights lights and 360 mirrors make me feel horrendous!

now I buy a ton of stuff online from M&S/next and try on at home then return the rest.

Cami's with loose fitting pretty shirts, cardigans or crochet numbers are nice and I find quite forgiving around the tum. But I do hear you. I am actually at a loss about fashion at the moment, everything seems to be made for a boy figure. If I get something to fit my bum, it is massive everywhere else.

Yes, am hating this at the moment. I guess supposed to go with the barrel jeans, another hatred of mine. Ugh!

V neck a line dresses with no defined waist. They are the only thing that works for me. I’m a similar shape with the added bonus of no discernible neck. ☺️

eatreadsleeprepeat · 07/05/2026 18:47

You have my sympathy, different shape but not whatever shape all the high street shops think we all are!
I envy you the skinny legs btw, that lets you wear different lengths of dress including some shorter shift dresses. Good bra definitely and dresses or tops which come in a bit (or at least don’t go out till just below your bust.

Solidarity with you 💕 body positive influencers can be useful to see someone with a similar body to you trying different outfits. They always look gorgeous.

That's interesting about barrel trousers/jeans because I love them, and have been wearing them for a few years. I have these from Primark and they look great. They very much suit a pear shape and the opposite - people lacking shaped bums.

I’m with you too. Menopausal weight gain, huge stomach and all of a sudden a huge pair of breasts that make everything look matronly and inelegant. I despair as everything I see in the shops are totally unflattering on a bigger body. Ugh frigging puff sleeves or polyester… Where are all the classic flattering clothes in nice colours and fabrics?

Yes same here! What is it with friggin' polyester!!! Driving me nuts. I have seen a couple of women similar age & shape on Facebook reels thing & followed them as they managed to find a few nice things that I liked I got some nice shorts/jorts?? from Roman of all places, I'd never have set foot in the place, before. Plus white stuff online (can never find anything my size actually in-store) have some lovely cotton shirt's & got a couple of great pull on but not obviously elastic waist, maxi skirts with pockets, that are ?ecovera? Fabric , cool comfy, look fairly smart & don't need ironing. Next is good for t shirts. Good luck.

I agree about the massive arse. I envied those with flat bums and slim arms and legs but it was the arse mainly which spoiled every look. That’s a lot harder to work with. Something would look nice full on view, but turn sideways and it’s like I’m wearing a bustle! Plus as a pear shape I don’t have a nice big bosom. It’s the worst shape!

Ive also been slowly losing weight and that arse is slowly, slowly coming down in size

😬

I’ve lost 3st and I miss my arse to be honest.

The first top for a long time I bought that really worked was from Live Unlimited. It had a v neck, sleeves just below the elbow, was long to the hips and had small ties that caught it in at hip height and it stayed loose over the belly. I’ll see if I can find something like it.

I also find that side fastening high rise trousers are infinitely more flattering to apples.

Live Unlimited have been my saviour. Their dresses are lovely and so well made.

Thesleepycat · 09/05/2026 17:14

Did you know you can get a personal shopper at John Lewis. I needed help to find an outfit for a wedding as I’ve gained weight. There was no pressure to buy anything. The woman was lovely and I got an outfit that I was happy with. She also gave advice about what suited my body shape and did a quick run round the cosmetics counters etc and I went away with about 10 free samples. You just book on line. A friend has done it just for everyday clothes and had a great time.

Oh @Ladyofwoods I feel exactly the same. I spent 4 hours trawling through every shop in my local area today and bought sod all. Tops are hopeless as im short fat and enormous boob's...most tops are short and wide and im short and wide enough!! Or super short and tight which does nowt for me. As for trying to get jeans...jeezo....tried next and m&s to no avail. I dont want jeans with elastic in them, they fall down as you walk....
As for trainers, jesus went again....j have small wide feet with a high instep...and got nowhere.

Im having a drink now... 😱😭

This is me as well OP, thank you for the thread! I've despaired this weekend at receiving yet more things bought online that turned out to be absolutely huge on the thighs and bum, but uncomfortably tight around my middle and bust. I definitely don't fit with the current 'shape'. I'm a 10 and struggling to find anything at all that fits on both my thighs/bum, and my middle at the same time.
Even dresses and skirts aren't safe from the barrel-cut - I've recently comprised on things looking 'right' and left the house in stuff I know is unflattering to the point of me looking incompetent in terms of dressing, just for the sake of actually having clothes on!
