Recommend me a product…. Self tanners

Background: I am extremely pale, so much so it gets commented on regularly when I am on holiday! type 1 skin, never have tanned only burned. I am going on holiday in June, I like the sun even though it doesn’t like me!
I don’t want to go on a sunbed but I can’t find a good self tan that suits me, I have tried loads but I can look dirty, orange or they are just too dark. I have tried the gradual tanners but I struggle without the guide colour and miss bits. I also have quite dry skin.
Can anyone recommend a nice light colour self tan with a guide colour?
Thanks.

Can you list what you’ve tried so we don’t recommend those?

I like Garnier Summer Body, Isle of Paradise drops or mousse (but get the one for the skin you have, not the shade of tan what you want), St Moritz mousse, Bondi Sands mousse, St Tropez mousse or cream (still miss the shower one).

I'm very pale (Irish) and recently rediscovered St Tropez. I think it's a gradual one so a nice easy glow rather than traffic stopping.

I also like the Garnier Summer body. I didn't notice a difference using the "Light" version, so maybe start with that and move onto Dark if necessary?

Does it have a guide colour when it goes on? I used to love the self tan mousse but they changed the formula so it was too dark. Thank you!

Yes, it's slightly tinted going on so my 16yo can mock my application abilities

HollywentLightly · 28/04/2026 19:53

I just checked and it's the daily tinted firming lotion I've been using. I'm still wobbly but a little less blue.

im a very similar skin type. And the comment about loving the sun and it just not like you, is exactly how I described myself. My go to is Skinny Tan- coconut water. Lovely subtle colour but you can build it up if needed

B bold mousse is nice. I wear it for weddings and events. Never for holidays though. Im very pale but I dont give two effs what people think of it.

impostacosta · 28/04/2026 21:07

The st tropez express mousse is good. Had a guide colour when applying and you can leave it as long as you want for the colour to deepen. An hour gives a lovely golden glow on me.

Goldpanther · 28/04/2026 21:09

I recommend Bali body self tan mousse. They do a matching face tan moisturiser that is gradual. The mousse goes on slightly tinted so you can see if you miss a bit. I am so pale and it has a green base so you don't get that orangey tone.

Fake tan is a real opiniated market some people swear by certain brands then others will hate that brand. I keep going back to St tropez each time its a nice smell has a colour guide and washes off well. vita liberate is also a good one. you need to prep well thoigh exfoliate well then apply at night wash off in morning. use a motoriser then daily to help maintain it. I did try one by dior - got as a present- loved it it was a gel. but very expensive

Skinny tan is the best I’ve used at a reasonable price. I hate the name but it’s decent stuff and looks pretty natural, hardly any ‘smell’. I wouldn’t say I am super pale skinned however I am quite fair and it looks pretty natural I think on my very white pale at the moment.

popsickle555 · 28/04/2026 21:29

What I love about skinny tan is no prep! I just whack it on…never had a streak yet that I’m aware of 😂

BamberGirl · 28/04/2026 22:01

Last year I found an Avon Skin-so-soft spray with a gradual tan. I really like it…it’s not dark, v gradual and gives my pasty skin a light tan. It also doesn’t smell as strongly as some of the other gradual products. It’s a moisturiser too so my dry skin is improved with it.

This is a cool tone one specifically for paler tones, I like it - I am milk bottle white for ref!

Super pale here and thus is my go to. Lovely natural colour you can build up and it is a tinted mousse. Despite my back handed efforts it works!

cack handed!

As proven here!

I'm the same natural colouring. I have used Dove - build it up over a few days. If I'm in more of a rush, Tan Luxe is brilliant. The colour comes up within the day and is very natural. I'd recommend using a Tan mit to help with coverage. Good luck.
