Do young children’s curls often straighten as they get older?

DD1 is almost 5yrs. Until the age of 3.5y, she had very curly hair. Between 3.5y - 4y ish, it was sort of wavy at the top into ringlets at the ends. But since her last haircut, it has been pretty much straight all the way down. Is this something that happens as children get older or am I not treating it in the right way?

We had been using childs farm shampoo and conditioner for curly hair (the light blue / coconut one) but if her curls are not coming back, I might switch her onto a different one. If I should be doing something different, then I'd really like to know how to bring them back and keep them healthy. Ive noticed if we go to the seaside, then it does start to curl again at the ends, but I guess that could just be the salt in the air?

In case it matters, she is white with Irish heritage through my DH.

And a friend had poker straight hair, and after chemo it grew back incredibly curly. Which looks great on her (not that it didn't before) . Hair is odd stuff.

My daughters have, ringlets as a toddler, started straightening on her head around age 5 with little curls on the ends, now 9 it is straight.

Me - curls as a toddler, waves as a child (though always brushed dry) and at 14/15 I got curls (and hair products).Still v curly at 50.
DD1 - curls as a toddler, straight as a child, wouldn’t curl for anything. Got curls in pregnancy and now as curly as me.
DD2 - curls as a toddler, wavy as a child and now straightens it…
DS3 - straight with ringlets as a toddler. Dead straight as soon as he was 3 and remained straight.

I have hopes for curly DGKs though 😍

Yes. My girls had beautiful, long ringlets and their hair looked like it had been highlighted.

They’re 7 now and is still curly but more of a wave.

And later in life too-friend of dh always had mad curls. Then he went grey, then white and his hair is poker straight now.

Yes, my child had curly hair then it went straight. Conversely, I’ve always had poker straight hair, but it’s become wavier as I’ve got older.

My DD had curls as a toddler that straightened by aged 5, but age 9 ish they came back and she now has lovely curls.

My stepdaughter had ringlets from age 1-6. She then got to a stage where it was sort of wavy and frizzy, I think because she hated having it styled so she always wore it up. She’s 16 now and has ringlets again, she started doing the curly girl method when she about 12, this involves lots of products, a silk bonnet and pillowcase and no heat, she has the most beautiful curly hair.
