Tall and plus size recent outfit recommendation's for nice meal out

Please can anyone recommend a recent purchase for a nice meal out in a local restaurant. I am 5’11’ and size 20 and it would need to be trousers and a nice top (that isn’t like a tent) or an easy to fasten flattering jumpsuit.

Scarlett & Jo have some good sale dresses, I’ve got a few (similar / larges than you) via Next & John Lewis.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 18/04/2026 16:11

Are dresses a no-no OP?

Fallulah · 18/04/2026 16:26

Fatface jumpsuits can be lovely and I always have to get them shortened at 5 ft 6 so would probably be a good length.

I get trousers from Monsoon, Boden and Next, and again usually have to shorten.

I also got some lovey dark jeans from Next recently (there was a whole thread on here about how fab their jeans suddenly are). Depends how flashy the meal location is!

Thanks will have a look. I was really hoping someone would say I have just ordered this last week, I am your height and build and its fabulous. We don’t have any shops nearby and I really need it for next weekend.

Jeans really wouldn’t cut it for this particular occasion as it would need to be something dressier. Nice trousers and a nice top, trouser suit, jumpsuit or a dress (but I don’t want my legs showing).

Re S&Jo, the lengths are great - just above ankle on many.
I second FF jumpsuits, some of those are stalwarts in my wardrobe.
Next long velvet trousers see me through many a nice event, though they’re bit warm.

Thank you yes its next weekend. So I wanted fabric that was cooler and lighter weight than velvet. What is FF?

FF is Fatface

Thanks nice dress but the waist would be higher on me and I am not getting my legs waxed again for a couple of weeks so don’t want to get my legs out so would prefer trousers and a top, jumpsuit or a lightweight trouser suit.

I think Next Tall have a couple of jumpsuits you could try, they never have them in store in Tall though, I order online. They also have loads of nice trousers.

SpidersAreShitheads · 19/04/2026 04:29

I’m a couple of inches shorter than you OP but always need a Tall because of my ridiculously long legs. I’m also the same dress size.

Personally I find a maxi dress is often the best option. I think they’re extremely stylish on a taller woman and the flow can be very flattering.

I think a lot depends how you carry your weight. I’m broad-shouldered with big boobs and a belly so trousers and a top cuts me in half at the worst point.

If you do want trousers I normally find Long Tall Sally comes up trumps.

Thanks for starting this thread op!

What infuriates me is when you look on-line as a plus size person for long trousers, and you see the tall option is available in all sizes until you reach size 20 and then a tall option is no longer available? Why? I don’t get it!

Because it appears you can either be petite, regular, tall or plus but you can’t be tall and plus. As all tall people are size 10 to 18 only.

Yes. It’s absolutely nuts isn’t it?

I happen to be overweight but funnily enough putting weight on hasn’t made me shrink in height! 😆

Hot Squash jumpsuits from next are long and lovely fabric.

Pistachiomonster · 19/04/2026 20:26

Just been into my local M&S today the biggest dress size they stock now is an 18 and most size 18 trousers and dresses were mainly only available in an 18 short very occasionally they had an 18 regular in the odd thing. The only styles available in long was a size 12.

I'm the same height as you but size 18 and just bought a jumpsuit from long tall sally (they go up to size 24). It is ridiculously long so I've had to have it taken up 5 inches but I love it. It's very flattering and the right length in the body. Easy to put on too, stretchy and no zips/buttons etc
