I'm trying to sort out an outfit for a funeral . I don't wear black but have got a really smart pair of navy trousers but im stuck on shoes . I bought a pair of navy courts from vinted but they're just not right somehow . They're a bit old fashioned looking and also the wrong shade of navy. They're slightly lighter than the trousers . I've googled and it suggests nude , beige or tan ! Would this work ? I'm really stuck as ideally I'd want to be able to wear them again but I dont want anything too high or too flat . Help please.

I wouldn't wear nude or beige shoes to a funeral, tan at a push, maybe. Do you have a pair of black or blue ankle boots? If so I would wear those. You are correct court shoes can look very odd with trousers because part of your foot is visible.

I tend to go tan, nude, brown, pewter or red. Obviously not red for a funeral though.

Brown or black depending on your top/coat.

If you have the shoes already, try both and pick what looks best. I'd go for brown I think but in my own case, I'd wear either brown suede loafers or black dress shoes (men's style derby shoes)

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 09/04/2026 10:49

Black or navy.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 09/04/2026 10:50

beige or tan could go

user1476613140 · 09/04/2026 10:51

Black.

TheSandgroper · 09/04/2026 10:55

Natural brown leather. I think it goes with almost anything and can look terribly smart.

GreekIslands · 09/04/2026 10:59

Tan if you have it.
If not , navy.
No one will be looking at your feet and thinking anything.

I'd also say that dress codes at funerals are very relaxed usually now and not everyone wears black.

TheApocalypticiansApprentice · 09/04/2026 11:04

Does ‘not wearing black’ extend to shoes, too? Because I’d have said black would be the obvious choice.

StylishAndBeautiful · 09/04/2026 11:17

@Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain , they're not ballerinas.
They're the sort of shoe I had in mind though.

I haven't got any black shoes , ive got a selection of trainers and sandals mostly . I have got a pair of navy suede flat pumps which are a bit too old and worn out and a pair of rust coloured loafers which ive never worn before but might be too orange! Im leaning towards looking for a pair of brown or tan loafers and I'll see how they look .

Wear the rust loafers.

Wreckinball · 09/04/2026 12:21

Have you any ankle boots or knee boots that would fit under the trousers in black or blue?

GreekIslands · 09/04/2026 12:24

I can only stress that funerals (unless it's a high profile person) are not about what anyone wears on their feet.
No one will give a damn, or any thought to your outfit.

Many of my older relatives have said they do not want mourners to wear black but to wear lovely colours, to celebrate their life.

I'm not saying ignore tradition but funerals are not about 'what goes with what'- more about showing up and showing you care.

Navy is the only colour for a funeral with navy.

StylishAndBeautiful · 09/04/2026 12:30

People always notice shoes.

why?

People always notice shoes.

I'd hope their thoughts were on more important things on the day than another mourner's shoes.

Silverbirchleaf · 09/04/2026 12:33

Brown loafers or ballet flats, but as long as the overall effect is dignified and smart, you should be fine.

Sorry for your loss.

It doesn't mean people don't notice.

On the scale of things, I don't think it will make much difference but it might if she attended wearing neon orange crocs with sports socks.
