What tops would modernise black 1940s-style swing trousers?

Me again, the unstylish one looking for guidance 😂

I LOVE these trousers but as they are out of my price range have been buying on Vinted and squirreling away. Always wanted the black ones and finally got them:

Sorry for long link!

I have them in red and rust already and wear with a black slash neck top. But as I am an anxious worrier always fancied the black ones as the colourful ones feel too much of a statement sometimes.

What top would look good with the black ones for a slightly more modern twist? I am absolutely overthinking this but any ideas would help my brain as I really wanted to wear them out next weekend! High street budget but just in general what do you think would look good?

Beautiful trousers.
I would wear them with something fine enough to tuck in, to show off the side buttons, unless you want to go for a full 40s look with a short boxy cardigan buttoned up

Thank you. Not keen to go the full 40s look for majority time so will need to have a look. Definitely will tuck in but wonder if a more plain t shirt/top would fit the bill and what colour 🤔 i thought I'd find it easier with black but not so much 😂

Ooooh, what a fabulous brand! I love the trousers.
TBH if it was me I'd probably lean into the vibe with a 40s style jumper or a pussy bow blouse!

Loose fitting t shirt tucked in with a french tuck?

This is perfect!

DreamloverTealover · 09/04/2026 11:59

@Overtheatlantic I love both of them thank you 😊

@henlake7 you're probably right, best thing that would go well would be a 40s blouse! Wanted to avoid looking like I am trying too hard to dress up vintage but there are some lovely blouses I have already that would go.

Back again. My 40s blouses are lovely but feel Like I am going to work wearing them with the trousers. Still can't find the perfect top for going out.

I'm either overthinking it or have decide it is jot the look for me 😐
