Top too big around waist

I've bought a lovely floral top that is fine on the bust, but too baggy around the waist. I was thinking of buying a plain sash l that ties around the waist rather than a belt as the top is quite floaty. Would this look stupid?

Why not just get it altered so it fits the way it should?

It would cost more than the top is worth.

Take it back and buy one that fits.

Try it with a bit of ribbon or string or whatever you have around to get an idea. I'm all for adapting things to suit in whatever way works.

Why does it matter? Surely making it wearable is important not the value?

A smaller one wouldn't fit my bust.

It's not that nice, pretty for the summer but I'd sooner just give it away rather than faff around.

I tied it with a sash from an old dress, a black chiffon one, and I thought it looked nice but was worried about it looking silly on me.

Wear it with the sash. Own your own style.

minipie · 08/04/2026 14:16

I would just return it and look for a different top that fits better.

Remember in hot weather you aren’t going to want a sash round your waist. And if there’s lots of excess fabric then the sash will create wrinkles/bunching in the top which won’t look great.

If you are at all worried about looking silly you will never wear it.

What style top is it? Would the sash be at the bottom or are you thinking cinched in at the waist with floaty fabric below?
Dd is quite handy and often adapts clothing to fit with stitching, buttons, elastic, shoe laces.
I’m sure there is a solution!
